I have been searching for a fault code reader for my jan 97 c180 w202 with the 38 pin socket - some reatilers have said that the EU702 might do the job and apparantly in its menu it has the w202 listed from june/07 onwards - this is so close i was wandering if anyone here has used a scanner that works on a model of this age or has any experience of them - i am really looking for engine data e.g. maf reading etc - i dont want to spend aroud £200 on something that does not work essentially

thanks

I have the MaxiDiag EU702, it did not come with a 38-pin plug (just the standard ODB-II 16-pin plug), so i guess you will have to buy some sort of adapter.

It works OK on my W203, only one small disappointment - the website says that the software on the MaxiDiag EU702 can be updated from the Internet, and technically speaking this is not a lie as you do get a USB cable and PC software - but what they don't tell you is that no new software has been released for it since it came on the market in 2006, and there is no date for any such update either.... so it practice it can't really be updated. This may not be relevant to you, but being a 2006 tool it does not cover newer MB models such as the new C-Class W204 which was introduced in 2007, and this is a bit of a pain for me as I am thinking of buying the newer model...

thanks for the update - i am suprised they have not updated it and i was not aware there was a newer model - i will have a look around as i plan to get a newer car in the future and was hoping this tool would last a while

Sorry, I meant to say that I was going to buy the newer model of the car (i.e. W204 instead of my W203), not a newer model of the tool... as far as i am aware there is no newer model of the MaxiDiag EU702 available.

Apparently Sealey sell the MaxiDiag EU702 under their own brand name, see:

Sealey Online (MAP UK) - [VS8650] Sealey Euro Vehicle Code Reader & Reset Tool - Sealey Tools UK|Compressors|Mig Welder|Equipment|Parts|Automotive|hydraulic|ratchet|jacks|sealeyonline.co.uk

But whether it has newer software or not - I do not know...

Ahhh i see - would it not still read engine data on the W204 as its still obd2 and/or canbus so I imagine that engine data would still be readable?

Donnow, don't have a W204 yet - when I'll get a W204, I'll try it and tell you :)

So is there a code reader that will read w204's without breaking the bank????

Bought my own STAR Diag from the following link after a recommendation from a fellow member on here.

Good value at the current exchange rates!

You could say it is a matter of opinion but that device is generally considered to be a low quality clone. There are "genuine clones" that look pretty much the same, not much more expensive. The one from the link is cheap but not necessarily best value for your money.

I have the EU702 and it will not work on the W202 with the 38 pin adaptor even though yours and mine (W202 2000 C240).

I have Car Soft on my laptop which does the job very well without breaking the bank !.

That may be true but the question is, does it matter?

The OP wants a low cost OBD diagnostic tool which will do more than spout codes which may or may not directly translate to STAR codes.

This it does, and does well from my experience.

Ya pays ya money and takes ya choice.

For the OP's benefit maybe you could give the forum a link to what you consider a better value unit? :)
