Hi

I need to replace the left side wing mirror on our W140 S-class after some **** kindly decided maliciously unfold it when the car was parked up.

I have a replacement mirror, thanks to the very helpful Ian @ W124 Works.

Now how do I fit the thing, does anyone have a diagram of the part and how it comes apart.

The part of my mirror that is damaged is the metal arm that forms part of the folding mechanism, is just this part changeable or do I need to change the complete unit?

Many thanks

Tan

You have to change the whole lot.

What year car is it?

How to unscrew the retaining screws on the w140 door mirror

In that case it's the same mirror as a w210, so fold it in and you'll see the 3 screws, undo those unplug and you're done.

You then just have to slide off the mirror cover from the old mirror and slide it back on the new one.

See: Flickr: Image for location of screws

Hello - I saw this post when I looked to see how to replace my own door mirror!

I can see the three screws, but I cant see how to unscrew the bottom one - it looks like I need a right-angled philips screwdriver to get at it? Or am I missing something.

Oh - and how do I slide off the cover to I keep the same colour cover?

adv-thanks-ance for any advice!

Update - I now realise everyone is referring to the three screws on the INSIDE of the door behind the triangular plastic panel.

But the mirror I have is only the "outside bit" - when I fold the mirror in I can see three screws - I can easily unscrew the top on forward one, but can bet the rearward one - its behind the mirror hinge

If I can get them out I can attach the mirror I have.

At the risk of dredging up a 3 year old thread, I thought I'd add my recent experience.

Firstly, it is the three screws on the outside that are only visible with the mirror folded that need to be removed, then simply detach the electrical connections to remove the mirror. This makes it remarkably easy for toe rags to pinch your mirrors if you leave them folded when parked. I speak form experience of returning to find my car sans wing mirrors.

More significantly, I had the same problem with a broken folding mechanism on one of my mirrors.

Part of the metal frame of the mirror is formed to engage into a recess on the exposed gear of the folding mechanism. It seems it is this part that snaps off if the mirror is forced, leaving it flapping around.

Having taken the mirror apart, which is not too difficult. I managed to use a 4mm drill to make a hole through the section of the frame that priously engaged with the folding gear, and secure a bolt through the frame held tight by a nut on the other side. It took some faffing around with a dremel to cut the bolt to the correct length, but it has worked. And the mirror works perfectly again.

I didn't take any pictures when doing any of this, but if anybody wants any more detail, let me know and I can easily take the mirror apart again for pics.

For ref, a new mirror form the dealer is currently 411 gbp inc vat (11 pin model with auto dim), and the cheapest I found from a specialist breaker was 180 gbp, and that had a fried wiring harness (a common problem with W140 mirrors). So all in all, I was quite pleased for an hours work.

Hopefully it can help someone out.
