Ford Escort Twin Cam 1970

Never realised the original BDA was 160 bhp thought they were always higher than that but as you say looks like that was the later cars.

The RS1600 was announced 1970, this car was the next development step from the Escort twin cam. The RS1600 was fitted with a 1600cc BDA 16 valve engine.

  • 1599cc, 16 valve, double over head cam, BDA
  • 120bhp (road), 160bhp (works)
  • Top speed 113mph (road)
During the RS1600's life the works cars started out with 1600cc BDA, 160 bhp engine, 4 speed gearbox and finished with 240 bhp 2000cc BDA engines, five speed ZF gearbox's.

The cars that won the World Cup Rally were RS1600's fitted with 1860 pushrod engines (X-flows) instead of the BDA unit. The reason behind this was the pushrod engine was built proof and was Ideal for a long distance event. With the success of the World Cup Rally gave us the MEXICO.

  • 4 Cylinder in-line, OHV, 1598 CC (road)
  • 86 Bhp / 92 lb ft (Road)
The Escort Mexico was a RS1600 with a Pushrod (X-Flow) engine. These two cars shared the same AVO strengthened Type 49 body shell.

You didn't correct the spelling mistake in your quote "bullet proof".;)

My best mate had a yellow/black Mexico 1600 which looked the business but wasn't actually any quicker than the Dolomite 1850 I had at the time. His car got a lot more attention from the police when out late at night too ... particularly when we drove home from the Hammersmith Odeon one night after the exhaust had parted at the downpipe :D

My mate's rs2000 mk2 love it to bits ,he still races it!

Went from that into the RS Escort followed by the RS Focus

Then it went down hill as I went back into an Astra GTE before finally hanging up my pro gloves in 2012 behind the wheel of a group N Impreza

Still co drive for my nephew though

Cracking engine, one of my favourites. A friend still has one in regular use, I will try and get a photo up of it when I'm back on the PC. His makes just over 300bhp at 9200rpm, mine was a shade below this.

Interesting side note, if you can find one of the original development blocks it would be possible to build an alloy blocked x flow but after this there is no provision for pushrods.

I guess he has put in an all steel bottom end.

Yes dieselman, in fact its not a bda but a 1937cc bdg now. It runs omex management on throttle bodies. I would have to get a mortgage ifidhavehad this spec but its very reliable. Its stripped and inspected every 100 hours but holds up to abuse very well.

The sound really is incredible, it takes a 4 cylinder M3 on slide throttles to make the neck hairs stand up the same!

the engine isn't a bda is xflow with a lotus head ,the bda's are worth a lot more. Sent from my iPhone using MBClub UK the Orange car as a bda engine.

The Lotus Twin Cam was chain driven and the cam cover extended over the chains at the front. This is a BDA as the front cover is plastic, covering the cambelt. People used to call the BDA, Belt Drive Anglia, as that is where the engine block originated

Friends recently restored genuine bda

Another way you can tell a BDA from the chain driven Twin Cam is the chain driven did not have the rubber bungs holding in the head the ignition leads instead you could see the HT leads directly on top of each plug.

I have owned two Mk1 Lotus Cortina`s and one Mk11 Cortina Lotus all chain driven during the early `70`s.
