Formula 1 2020 (Will Contain Race Day Spoilers)

Precisely what I meant, if he's such a great driver why would he be bothered. The thing is GR drove the **** off it last week and that drive will not be forgotten

But you're not getting wnat I meant .... so not that precise.

I said way back last week that he wasn't a great driver ,without the car he was a good driver which imo GR proved now in today's qualifying GR is at the back in his Williams and LH is the 2nd row i mentioned swopping cars just to see the difference and got slated for it GR will be 1 to watch if he gets a better car and now he did that i think he may get the chance to shine again

You have an interesting take on the term 'precisely'. And on justifying it.

You miss that LH has three things going for him

- He is naturally fast - through an entire race
- he has developed good raceraft and racing intelligence
- he doesn't make mistakes

You judge his position today where he doesn't do so well - conveniently missing this is the last race of a season where he has done very well and at the same time he is a few days post-Covid. And you use this as confirmation bias for your own perspective.

Anyway - to expand - IM(NV)HO on what I think.

My position is that LH doesn't want GR in his seat today for two reasons. First is natural territorality and guarding his own status. That's what top talent in sports and arts do. Second is the complication of GR doing even better relative to VB and MB maybe under huge pressure to making a very raw and hard decision to park VB and get GR in as his teammate at any cost. Moreover the attention would all be on GR.

Reality of having GR in the car is that he gets into the same situation as FA was back in 2007. Even if he is consistently faster than GR chances are he will lose more points to his own teammate. My view is that he would still best GR but over a season GR would get stronger. A 23 race season means that if GR makes mistakes there are races to play catchup compared with previous seasons.

So does he want an 8th WDC. If he gets it with VB in the other car then unless Red Bull and MV are able to compete more then people like you will just say that he's in the fastest car. If he had GR as a teammate then the attention shifts. If he comes second in a couple of consecutive races then the pres will do to him what they do with VB - which is to shift their interviewing and questioning to how he relates to his teammates's performance.

It's also worth reminding ourselves that very poignantly LH doesn't have a contract for next year. It's mid-December! That is remarkable. So does he want the hassle.

He has also seen Nico Rosberg take an exit - and get on with his life.

I think it's 50:50 that he will retire this year. Take the 7th WDC - leave at the top - take the knighthood.

I also can't help feeling an echo of SV's words on the radio at the penultimate race in 2013 - the last year he won the WDC: "We have to remember these days, there’s no guarantee they’l l last forever!"

If MB can with more time, adjust the inside of the car so that GR can fit properly for a season without having to make the outside bigger, then he is a viable option for next year in either seat. If however the tub needs to be bigger around the pedal box and bit longer, then that might well cost some lap time. The difference to the Red Bull car is closing. If Albon could improve his consistency or if Perez gets the seat for next year, they will be snapping at MB’s heels.

So, LH and Mercedes may well have concerns about the potential hit on pace with putting GR in a seat right now. I really don’t think LH is ‘running scared’ of having GR in the team, but others may well have a different opinion of course.

I thought Jos Verstappen was excellent with his post-qualifying interview. Lots of praise for the team and no complaints about anything or anyone.

I think Spider is putting himself into a minefield with those comments being that we are mainly British and mainly owners of Mercedes. Does this mean we are possibly wearing blinkers when we discuss motor racing? Regarding Lewis Hamilton I side with Spider.

Last week proved beyond any doubt that the Mercedes is by far and away the very best car on the grid. Crikeys only knows what Williams are doing with that engine and perhaps they need to be told it has a battery power pack to give it some punch.

I do not believe that Russell needs a second drive to prove how good he is because last week he proved how good the Mercedes is. We can then look at how he performs in the Williams and has Russell got anywhere near the podium in wet races, or when the so called top drivers crash out?

Hamilton is a seven times World Champion and all credit to him for achieving that but only those that we might consider bias will stand firm and say he could have done this in any other car!!

I had the misfortune to read one such person who is so blind, so ignorant that whilst defending Hamilton they accuse Senna of setting a standard for barging or forcing his way to the front!! This to me says more about that person's knowledge of motor racing rather than being an informative post. if we have the fastest car and we are a good driver, then there is a fair chance of being a winner, but ANYONE and I mean anyone participates ion motor racing and they have the attitude of 'After you' they will soon be handed their P45. If any racer does not take the slightest of oppurtunities to overtake, then they will at best be a loser, at worse out of a job.

I recently asked about best races and how about we watch two drivers in different makes of F1 car battle for position and not... battling for the lead

Here we go, one of the fastest and possibly most aggressive drivers I have seen and PLEASE accept that I mean aggressive in a polite sporting term, he never went about settling for second place.. Eyes down and look in Oh and apologies for the French commentary it just sounds more passionate than Murray Walker :)

Yup our Internet warrior is certainly correct when they accuse Senna of being the first driver to barge their way through.

Apologies for being confrontational but I guess it is better that I get that drivel out of my head.

Ooops, Not 'drivel' when talking about Hamilton, he is a seven times Wolrd Champion but contrary to what some folks think, he does make mistakes just like when Senna crashed when leading the Monaco Grand Prix. No one is perfect

My feeling is that Lewis is the full package and has helped to develop the car over many years that he now dominates in. Surely its up to the other drivers and teams to work together and improve their package.
GR definitely proved he is quick in a merc and commented on how sweet it is to drive, so he can take that knowledge back to Aston and help improve his own car. Almost any of the drivers parachuted into a race winning car would improve inc. nor, sai, per etc etc. It's time to stop bashing ham and accept he's good.
I predict Merc and ham will pull out all the stops for 2021 get an 8th title, driver and team, rewrite the books and then have a major reorg for the new regs, and sir ham will retire to extreme e and other interests leaving the reckless mazepin and ver to fight it out literally. ;)

I object to anyone and I do mean anyone receiving a knighthood when they are not a resident of our country. Does Toto Wolff live in the UK, if he does then so can Hamilton who is English?

Jonathan Rea in a sport far more dangerous than F1 is never talked about when folks discuss a knighthood and at least he lives in Great Britain.

Nope, if folks want to live abroad to avoid paying UK tax, then take away their British passport :) IHow many F1 drivers have lived abroad for exactly the same reason) Yup, I am sure there are those who have received knighthoods when not residing in this country and to me it is plain wrong.

Let Hamilton live in our country and let his taxes help pay towards a better quality of life for those that are disadvantaged. Talking the talk and appearing in front of cameras is one thing but avoiding paying tax is quite another 'thing' :) Instead of a knighthood, put him in the Tower of London on a diet of bread and water.

Arise Sir Jonathan Rea resident of the United Kingdom and holder of six World Championships :) and on a machine that might not be the best in that formula

Whether ham or rea or anybody else deserves a knighthood and the criteria required are out of our hands and your comments are more about that than racing. Why not mention dyson, green, ratcliffe in your rant re tax evasion and while your at it mention builders that ask for cash payments and many others that use tax law to reduce/avoid their liability including high st names and politicians with multiple financial interests, also the money laundering city of london financial theives.
Anyway should be a good race and a chance to see some overtaking and strategy at play :) ... has Merc sorted their pitstops

Well given this is an F1 thread, it’s no surprise that Jonathon Rea‘s name doesn‘t come up too often. On the other hand I agree that his achievements in World Superbike are often overlooked. I enjoyed watching him in BSB, where of course he was often the rider to beat on a race weekend. Does he deserve a knighthood? Maybe he does because he is hugely talented, committed and successful, and not because happens to live here too.

If we want the likes of Lewis Hamilton et al to reside in the UK, we should adopt a more attractive (and fairer) taxation system. In other words, it should be more cost effective to live here and pay taxes than it is to hire tax accountants and live in Monaco. But that’s waaay outside the remit of this thread.

There are a good few here that have given their advice on using tax law to reduce/avoid their liability and I’ve seen their posts slagging off LH for living in Monaco.

Disappointing to read that Lewis isn’t 100% fit for today’s race.

I was struggling to understand why someone with the 2020 DWC already in the bag would risk his health by taking part? It’s not as though Mercedes need the constructors championship points.

Then I was thinking that maybe he wants to prevent George Russell from proving that last week wasn’t a fluke whilst safe in the knowledge that if he doesn’t win he has the perfect excuse?

Of course, if he does win it only boosts his reputation for getting results whilst below par.

It’s a win-win situation for him with the side benefit of diminishing the victory for who ever might win because they beat him when he wasn’t 100%

I think I’ve just answered my own question..

Your comments reveal your lack of knowledge; Senna has a clear history of deliberately punting off cars ahead of him.

You may recall even Sir Jackie Stewart, 3 time world champion, criticised Senna’s accident record in an interview.

Try to argue your case from points of fact not ill informed opinion.

I am far from being a Hamilton fanboy - as clearly you are from your distaste in his beliefs and actions off track. I don't believe he deserves a knighthood for doing his job....

If he is not fit, he should not race.

I am possibly guilty of being sucked into drifting off topic but hey.... Let he or she that does not do this raise their hand.

LH has also suggested his lack of a good qualifying was down to having that ten-day gap he endured... Yup, that also makes sense as much sense as him being under the weather.

If ANY driver is unfit to race then they should be stopped from racing. If they are fit to race then get in the car and race.

Could it be that his ego has been dented when we see someone that had not earned a single race point all season, jump into his car and perform as good as Hamilton? Every pundit was predicting that both Mercedes would have, could have, might have lapped the whole field in that last race. Hup, as I said previously, this is a UK site and we have fans of Hamilton who believe his results are all down to him and woe betide anyone that disagrees with them :)

Going way off-topic yet again.. It was a common sight to see motor-bike racers quite literally being lifted onto their machine bevause of broken, or injured bodies and yet they still won races.

And the relevance of that clip is what? I don’t see either driver deliberately crashing into the other, forcing them off track into the gravel damaging the cars so they can’t continue.

What I see is hard but fair racing.

Have your rose tinted glasses have distorted your view?

Greenman
Children say they are 'never going to speak to you again'

Most of them grow out of that habit.

I am perhaps guilty of reminding you of your words but I am not going to respond to your observations

Well at least that would prevent gongs for political ambassadors working abroad to develop and maintain UK relationships for the good of our economy y and security.

If being hugely talented, committed and successful makes you eligible for a knighthood then surely there would be vastly more of them around. People like Jonathan Albon, the British sky runner and obstacle course racer who has won three Skyrunner World Series. Widespread popularity in sport appears to be a major qualification.
