Formula 1 2022 (Will Contain Spoilers)

So no cheating in soccer, the most watched & loved sport in the country? No awful behaviour from supporters when their team does not win? No cops keeping opposing supporters apart.......etc.
But that is done in front of a crowd for all to see. F1 cheating happens in a very secure factory away from prying eyes so can only be investigated after the fact

We only hear about the ones that get caught in F1. ;)

Cheating is cheating.

People were happy to see LH dominate for ~10 years. Now that he is not dominating, F1 is boring.
I've said it before, but I'll repeat it: F1 is always boring when one team dominates.

I stopped watching (or at least limited watching) F1 when Schumacher & Ferrari were dominant, when RB were dominant with Vettel, and when Mercedes were dominant with LH. I must confess that I did rather enjoy the 1992 season when Williams & Mansell were dominant, but that was a one-off rather than an extended period.

Last season - as long as the debacle at the end is ignored - was actually amongst the best for many years for the very reason that the previously dominant Mercedes team were properly challenged. The season was spoiled (for me and many others) when the FIA official mis-applied the rules and gifted the race to Verstappen. I would have been equally unimpressed if the boot had been on the other foot, with LH running second on the track then going on to be gifted the win as a result of a mis-application of the rules thereby denying Verstappen the race and the championship.

The icing on the cake is that it then transpires that the team whose driver "won" the championship wasn't playing by the rules either.

So, for me at least, it's nothing to do with LH dominating or not dominating.

Imagine a race where red bull. Merc. Ferarri. Mclaren. Alpine of Alonso and the Aston of Vettel were level pegging and you had no idea who was going to win every week. That would be something

Broadly speaking MotoGP and even WSBK manage this (although Ducati have been out front by miles in some races), and that's with a single race tyre.

Should Pirelli formulate a tyre to last a whole race then it's upto the drivers to manage them? Go out hard to gain a lead but with the risk the grip won't last; or cruise at the beginning saving some grip for a fight at the end of race?? I don't know.

The F1 drivers don't drive, they merely pilot the cars round - it's driven by strategy.

As I said above, cheating is cheating. Impossible surely to make comparisons about who and where.

"Governing body the FIA said that Red Bull had overspent by £1.86m in 2021"

£1.86m - that's an awful lot of employee lunches!

Which year's budget will the fine come from?

AM I being too cynical in expecting a marked upturn in Alpha Tauri's aerodynamic performance next season?

Back in the dim and distant 80's and 90's, I used to regularly go and watch this thing you call 'racing'.
It was the British Touring Car Championships, which also had some juicy support races like the TVR Tuscan Challenge.
Happy Days☺️
Ah Thundersaloons!! That was a fun series to watch (and hear)

I’m sure that for some, what you say is 100% true and that is why you are still here. However I think the opposite is true for the majority.

Regarding the $7m "fine", for a global corporate the size of Red Bull it's pretty much small change, but it does (or at east should) have a reputational impact.

I would have preferred to see a reduction in the cost cap for the 2023 season as a penalty as it would act as a serious deterrent to anyone minded to transgress in future, but I guess the FIA preferred the dosh in their bank account.

Re the fine, if it has to come out of this year’s (or next year’s) RBRacing’s budget, that effectively would be a reduction in their ‘cap’. But if not, what punishment is it in real terms?

Edit: it seems the fine isn’t to come out of next year’s budget…

Doubt it. They will be back next year. What might hurt is windtunnel time.
Alpha Tauri are looking forward to Adrian Newey being seconded to them.
