Fuel consumption at Idle - Sprinter

Hi, I am doing some research on fuel consumption and have discovered that fuel consumption figures are all averaged. Does anyone know figures for fuel consumption ONLY at idle for a Sprinter?

I doubt the idling fuel consumption is known, as you say the official tests follow a very precise script of accelerating / cruising / braking / etc. and it's only the TOTAL fuel used that is measured.

You'd also have to be more specific about the vehicle. I assume you mean the latest version of the Sprinter, but there are 5? different engine options which will have varying consumptions.

surely thats going to be a Litres or gallons per hour figure rather than a miles per gallon / L/100km.

Can i ask why you need to know that?

MPG at idle is zero for all cars...

But fuel consumption (the original request) isn't. As Fuzzer said, it would be probably be measured in litres/hr.

Of course it would be highly dependant on what electrical (or other) equipment was switched on. Aircon etc. can have a significant effect on MPG while a vehicle is moving, with it stationary it would hugely affect the amount of work the engine had to do (and hence the fuel consumption).

Cannot help you with a Sprinter but suspect the answer is going to be "not much".

What I can tell you is that one of my former cars (a 2.5 litre V6 petrol) had an "instant" fuel consumption setting that showed the rate at idle: 0.3 gallons per hour that clicked up to 0.4 GPH if the aircon was switched on.

Diesel engines use less fuel at idle anyway so my guess would be 0.2 GPH or less.

We have a 2002 Sprinter with a 213CDI, but I fear it would take too much effort to help with your request. The only easy way I can picture you getting an answer is to completely fill the tank to the brim. Not moving it, then allow it to tick-over for an hour. When the hour is up, then top the vehicle up back to the brim, but why?

If you think your vehicle is overly thirsty then that is a different issue?

Good luck getting an answer.

John

For a warm engine (coolant=80°C) at sea level, with and without A/C consumption is approximately:

2.2 4 cyl AC on: 0.86 Litres per hour
2.2 4 cyl AC off: 0.49 Litres per hour
2.7 5 cyl AC on: 0.62 Litres per hour
2.7 5 cyl AC off: 1.08 Litres per hour

divide by 4.54 to get gallons per hour.

Had my laptop plugged into a Sprinter this afternoon and the figures are spot on.

Thanks very much,
I'm a bit on the slow side, but does that equate to a pint an hour? 1.03?

I think I'll chuck my engine in a boat :D :D Although knowing my luck it will be 8 gallons an hour :o :o

Nearer 2 pints per hour. A litre is greater volume that a pint.

No messing about with litres or pints there....not enough digits in the display.

LOL.
I just phoned my mate who has a 2543 Actros.
He says it is 2 gallons per hour average.

So 1.08 l/h = 1.899 pints /h.
Oi,
I've got the 2.2, but it has a clever large air con compressor in the rear of the vehicle.

Aren't most Sprinters now using the 2.2 engine? Note I said MOST, not all.

There are at least 5 different engine options in the Sprinter:

  • 88 bhp
  • 109 bhp
  • 129 bhp
  • 150 bhp
  • 184 bhp

Correct.
I learnt it at school just a 1ltr = 1 3/4 pints. Can't be bothered with the other numbers.

Just noticed though, buy the 2.7 5cyl.
It's cheaper to run with the A/C on:devil:

Whoops! typo! should be the other way around!!!!
