26mpg overall. Well maintained they will go on almost forever. However it will need a head gasket and wiring loom at some point if not already done. Our 280 which is basically the same does around 8000 miles per year including down to or back from Italy when it will happily cover 1000miles in a day.

Ideal as a cruiser. They are happy to press on but they are better as cruisers. The 280 has a natural speed at which it feels most comfortable of between 70-75mph indicated. Any faster and its revving quite hard unless you have the 5-speed auto option.

The 104 engine is a pleasant cruiser, but be warned it is like a Honda in that at 4k it suddenly changes character completely. It sort of says "Oh, you want to play " and gets very rorty and urgent.

I'm getting 28 all round from a 3.0 m103 w126. Don't take up through the gears but not afraid to push on a bit on the motorway. People seem to slide out of the way at the sight of my grill approaching so it makes for easy progress.
28 on a fast motorway run of an hour or more. 22-25 tootling round town, but I'm in hill country. The loom is perfectly DIYable if you can solder and it's not your only car. I took a week of an hour or two each night to do mine very carefully, but the only skill was one of methodical organisation and recording.
