Good & bad colours

Ask a dealer for the trade-in prices for identical cars but in different colours.
You may not be surprised to find there can be huge differences in prices offered.
In fact, some dealers wont even quote you a price on some cars in certain colours.
There was a thread on this forum recently where a dealer told a member that he would only take a certain car as a trade if it was a diesel AND was in silver. Everything else was a thanks - but no thanks.

For older cars I think you can get away with a colour of the period - as numerous posters have said, there were some very peculiar shades available in the 70's, but on a 70's motor they look OK. For more modern machinery, unless it's overtly sporting & you want to advertise the fact, I'd always go for a more sombre colour. Captains of Industry by and large like to blend into the background & be as unobtrusive as possible ;) hence the proliferation of darker colours.

Personally I don't like silver & I'd never own a green car (I had it ingrained at an early age that green was unlucky - no idea why!). As for white, it is just the colour of choice for press launches these days. I belive the last time it was officially the most popular car colour in the UK (according to SMMT sales figures) was 1982.

Green cars (when it was a popular colour) always used to figure very high in accident statistics.
Its because Green - specially darker shades of green blended in to the background the most. Which made them less conspicious - more so at night.
The colour therefore got this reputation for being "unlucky". Which in an around about way is/was correct.

Interesting theory, but I believe very few cars look good in green, & that is more likely why it is not a popular colour.

I am rather liking this in green at the moment, undecided as to whether to buy it or not:dk:

Not so bad as the other one due to the paint being metallic, but I have saw nicer Astons in other colours.

I guess it is a fashion/fad sort of thing .

Colour pallettes change over the years - when did you last see a Maple Yellow or Milan Brown car ? These were popular colours in the 1970's .

I've had W124's in both Nautic Blue and Almandine Red and , at the time , thought they looked great - probably still would .

it is all a matter of personal taste .

Almandine red was always a personal fav of mine and so was the later Ruby Red that came out on the W202 (I think).

Gold looks quite attractive on the W203 but no so much on the W126.

But yeah, the mixtures are quite nice e.g. Met blue/black or the Met green/black because they look different cars in different light or when it's not clean!

Hi the last three cars i have had have been black, you just cant beat it for a shine, but it depends on what type of person you are. if you like cleaning your car its got to be black because it shows all the dirt after no time at all. or if you dont like cleaning then its got to be silver i have a van thats silver and i cant remember when i cleaned it last and it still looks good. red is nice but if you keep the car for a long time the bonnet starts to fade but white is the in colour at the moment and the merc white is very nice as its more cream than white. what ever colour car you want you need to think of re-sale and the more off the wall colour you go for the harder it will be to sell it later saying that i am selling my C280 at the moment in black and i havent had much interest so maybe i should have bought a yellow one.
