Had my 1st motorbike accident today

Go out in the rain as much as possible at first, you will learn to read the road better, pick the right lines and then when the weather is warm will be far safer, faster and more confident than before.

My first ride after getting my licence was in Feb in the frost, never have drain covers and white lines filled me with so much dread

So the next time it rains, pick a quiet time so you can build your own pace up and go for it.

Also, LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO BE, this helped me immeasureably and got me to the point of removing my chicken strips without even intending to, the best piece of advice to get imo.

Oh and have fun :D

Dave!

Sorry to hear that! If it makes you feel better, I had a similar incident doing an emergency stop over a manhole cover... ironically, I was trying to avoid a diesel slick...

I've got one of my bikes in a bodyshop at the moment... I'll let you know how their respray turns out! (it was definetly cheap, £300 for a full respray of a sports bike)

Simon, your post title implies you intend to have further accidents, hope that's not true.

Glad to see that you are ok, but learn for future that if you broke the signal sometimes it becomes very tough to you, As there may be serious danger on the road. I suggest to all that dont broke the traffic rules.

If not passed the driving theory test uk, apply for it(book it) very soon. Visit theory-test.co.uk

I used to figure on coming off around once a year. Usually on wet, cobbly roads after a dry spell. Or on black ice.

As for the steering being out of line with the front wheel, stand facing the front of the bike, grip the wheel between your knees and pull on the bars till the wheel is back in line :thumb:

I feel for you being a biker too. At least your posting on here from home and not a hospital bed. Hope you feel better soon matey,

Last time I checked, Jaguar were not making vans ;)
Why do you ask?

That plate is worth a fair bit, and yes my van would look good with that as an adornment :D

Got me one of those too (metal knee, leg ankle etc) bit older than you tho (46) lost mine about 18 months ago. Been riding for 30 years, year round, me and my georgeous R1 got taken out by a women in a Vulva estate, broke my back (thankfully repairable) 4 broken ribs, both lungs partially collapsed, Oh yes and left my left leg in the side of the car as I went over the top. Air lifted into the local (and very good, at least for me) hospital I had 16 units of fluids (blood, plasma etc) put in on the way as my "femoral bundle" artery vein and nerves had been severed in the accident. I was wearing 4 month old Frank Thomas gear with titanium armour, Shoei helmet, high vis vest (in short all the right stuff) but this **** managed to turn across the front of my bike (I was travelling at 50 mph on a main A road and saw her indicating from about 100 yards away, she was chatting to her mate and didnt see me til the last few yards) because she "thought she could make it". Just goes to show you can do everything that you think is right but its that 1 Dic**ead that'll getcha (worst of it was it was the second time this had "happened to her" and she got £260 fine and 6 points. This after admitting 100% liability!). Anyway thanks for reading my rant (me bitter?). Not my intention to bring the mood down, although I must admit I dont sound a bundle of laughs :D. I've got a lot of mates still riding (although 3 or 4 sold their bikes after my accident) and hopefully nothing like this will ever happen to them, or anyone on here. Stay shiny side up :thumb:.

fizzer sorry to here that mate i really am. i know how it is and its always a ****ing woman. i dotn think il ride on the streets ever again. people can call me what they like. scared or whatever. but im told if i have a accident on that leg again they will take it. so bieks are for the track in my book. really mate sorry to hear about that.

every person i know who has or had a bike has been hurt to some degree or another

recently my friend dropped a test bike and then her mates bike (both 500's) on her leg & ankle

another mate has been knocked off his bike twice

another mate was doing mental speeds on a motor way and got side swiped by an old woman in a micra and luckily hit the central reservation flat on still doing 3 figures and it slowed him down and steadied him up and only had a badly bruised right leg but could have died

i just dont see the point

maybe 1 in 10 cars drivers have had an accident, maybe 1 in 100 get hurt but bikers die all the time

my mate was at the TT and rang me every day and every day i asked had some moron died yet driving like a tit

on the 4th day she said yes

a mate of mine on the ****nal site his uncle lost both legs last year and he was only 30 ish

cant see the point

Thanks mate (Tonysmallz) :thumb:. Dont think I'll ever ride on the road again (Mrs has no doubts at all) Its what it does to the people around you that makes it worse (I've got 2 sons, a daughter and, of course, the wife) they were absolutely gutted and my missus is still seeing a psychotherapist. The bike bug never goes away tho and lately I've been considering a 98 R1 or nR6 as a track bike. Theres a "klick shift" electronic gearshifter that has an up and down button on the left bar which would overcome my "disadvantage". I reckon my weight loss might make me faster, what do you think? Just dont tell Mrs Fizzer ;)

TBH its not something you can attach logic to. People that ride bikes, in my experience see cars (and yes, I do mean all cars) as the inferior form of transport and view those trapped in their "cages" with pity. If you have never experienced it then riding something that offers no protection from weather or other larger road users is completely crazy, but once its in your blood theres no going back :wallbash:

because she "thought she could make it".

Yes , I had that pitiful excuse from a woman who turned right across my path at a crossroads ( I was in my Merc at the time , going straight ahead and had to stand on the brakes to avoid her ! ) - when I followed her all of 300 yds along the road to her house and asked her what the H*ll she thought she was doing , I got the above reply :wallbash:

Only once ever was hit on my bike , and managed to stay on m thankfully : going straight ahead at lights in the left hand lane , dizzy female in right turning lane changed her mind just as I was passing and pulled into my lane , clipping my exhaust . She was genuinely shocked and very apologetic , so hopefully a lesson learned and mistake not repeated . No harm done to me or my bike , small mark on front wing of her car ( Polo ) which I left her to deal with as she caused it .
