I have not hit over 20mpg in my new (2003) E320 CDi yet..

Are you going up hill or pulling a caravan to get these fuel results ?

Joking aside I find my mpg goes down from normal when I have the family in the car and the boot full of bags and the like.

OT..
Do you find the powered bike of real benefit. I tried one and found it far too heavy so required more additional input than a regular lightweight bike.

I don't think I was ever serious about buying one though, just like to know whats around, although I did seriously consider an electric scooter, they have terrific torque.

Agreed many are very heavy which is why I went for the Giant Lafree, the lightest of the lot. You can actually use it without the power. Still heavier than my trusty old Claud Butler though.

Getting back on topic.

I'm taking the car in to Merc Care in Leeds tomorrow to be looked at.

Really nice guys there. They said i could drop in tomorrow and they will run a diagnostic on the car.

Could be one of two things i was told. The Air flow sensor or the air filter.

or sticky EGR valve, or been remapped, possibly badly.

MAF would be first hit.

Remap? I have thought of this...

The car had been at winchestercars in Leeds.

They deal with very high performance cars etc. So i dont know...

Maybe its nothing.

Once again i was told by a fully qualified Mercedes technician that a remap can not be tracked yesterday. So how can they found out whether its been remapped?

If you think it may have been mapped get the version read and flashed to the correct one. It may well fix your issue.
Another member had a similar issue and it was the map being written wrong and causing over-fuelling at low revs.

I do 6 mile per day to work and 6 home. On a good run I get 27mpg on a bad run 16mpg and that is a 3.2 petrol. I also get 32+ per gallon on motorways. It sound as if there is something wrong there somewhere.

Update..

Took the car for a proper drive after work.

Got up to around 28MPG in city driving. On wellying it, it never went below 23MPG.

What i did was reset the after start interface and just drove from there.

Are you idling a lot after startup?

Nope. Just turn key and off i go.

Although there are a LOT of traffic lights in Leeds/Bradford!

PS: Can anyone advise on a tyre pressure for running the 19"s on? I am currently on 34PSi..

I just dont think this may be enough.

A contentious issue...

I would advise sticking within the manufacturer's range as shown on the door shut / fuel flap / handbook.

Try adjusting within that recommended range for the best compromise between ride / handling / wear. or bias it toward your preference :)

Try drawing a chalk or wax crayon cross across the tyre tread and see where it wears off first.
If it's the edges then they are under-inflated, if it's the centres then they are over-inflated.

Does that really work? I mean, yes for wear but what about ride and handling?

The tyre is very dynamic when being driven, surely its got to be judged over a reasonable time and distance?

I don't think the line makes any difference to the handling....;)

The line just indicates whether the pressures are correct for wear, ride and handling may be a trade off.

My MPG figures on 8 cars over the last 16 years since i started driving MUST be the most horrific in the UK , if not the world - i kid you not - never found a solution :(

you buy a nearly new merc... and it doesnt have the handbook?

Now I know you are a timewaster

In defence of the OP it is a 5 yr old merc. Please, if you have nothing constructive to add then say nothing. Unusual for me to be negative in a thread but really getting fed up with the little digs on what was a legitimate question by the OP - checked your posts Sweeney and you seem to be getting a habit going....hope I'm wrong.

I had an E270cdi. Great car. I found 30-32 psi all round suited most conditions with just one or two of us on board. Fully loaded with people and gear it needs more.

My mother used to say 'if you can't think of anything pleasant to say; say nothing'.

Surprising how often that is good advice.

Donza, congrates on finally getting a car you are happy with.

my 57 plate 320CDI is giving around 27mpg average over the 10K since new. I get from 20-25 int own driving(London) and up to 41mpg on the motorway at a steady 80mph. this has improved recently as the engine starts to loosen up.

which 19inch wheels do you have, are they OEM I cant tell from your pic?
