I have not hit over 20mpg in my new (2003) E320 CDi yet..

Almost every car I have ever had has had a tyre pressure chart which shows the pressure for all tyre combinations that the car could possibly come with from the factory. It usually meant as diameters increased & profiles became lower, the pressure increased accordingly.

Mercedes appear to be different, because they only list the tyre size the car left the factory with and its pressure range. The same car with different tyre sizes leaves the factory with different plates showing the pressures.

A few on this forum will tell you the pressure is the same whatever tyre size you have, television was the biggest culprit & in my opinion this information is simply wrong. If you have a larger diameter, lower profile tyre than stated inside the fuel lid, I would increase the pressure by a couple of PSI & see how it feels.

Many thanks for your post.

This is one of the reasons why i like this board so much. Such great knowledge amongst seasoned Mercedes Drivers.

I took heed of everyones viewpoint, and thus far i have decided to go with 36 PSi in all four tyres.

The real reason i asked for the correct PSi was that i have never driven a car with 19's on. The last thing i wanted was to be driving on alloys with barely any cushion.

You need to give it time, its no use looking at the MPG on the computer after a few short trips.. you need to do a full tank of driving and then work it out manually... I never trust the on board computer.

Is 27mpg a good figure? I know my car doesn't compare but if I drive like a looney it will not drop below 33/35, average driving is 45mpg, driving like Guido and I get 50+

Considering I may be tempted by a E320CDi or C320CDi next, I'm not so sure now if that's what is to be expected

In my opinion? for a diesel engine? NO..

But i have come from a terrific engine in a 2002 A4. But the E320 W211 is a heavy car, but wow what performance. Overtaking is so easy!

All in all, an E270 CDi is also a terrific car in its own right. It was my first W211, and it has a lot of grunt also. A great combo.

But no E270 i saw had all the toys i wanted..

My C320 cdi is showing an average of 39.3 over the last 10,000 miles...

Oi!

I'll have you know that I drive "fluently and spirited" (but always within the speed limit :p), as my advanced driving instructor taught me all those years ago. :D

But as I do get 32mpg easily on the motorways with my V8 5L petrol, I agree that Donza's numbers are, well, "disappointing". ;)

The largest wheels available as a cost option for the 2003 W211 was option 790 which were 18" I assume the 19" were for a different type of Mercedes?

AMG light-alloy wheels (4)
(only with code 486 or 489) E 200 KOMPRESSOR Classic/E 220 CDI Classic 1,897.87 2,230.00

Front: 8 J x 18 (245/40 tyres) E 240 Classic/E 270 CDI Classic 1,829.79

2,150.00

Rear: 9J x 18 (265/35 tyres) Elegance/Avantgarde 1,540.43

1,810.00
E 500 Elegance/Avantgarde 1,131.91

In my 'old' E270 I get an average of around 38mpg in primarily town driving but with some motorway thrown in. On my way home today on a 43 mile stretch of motorway the car averaged 59.8mpg(admittedly according to the OBC) - this after I reset on joining the motorway and setting the cruise to 65mph, pretty amazing for a car of its size. But it does show how much fuel is used when cold, accelerating/stopping etc.

I am unsure regarding the history of the wheels. I bought the car as and when last week.

I assume the 18's were palmed of at some stage between 2003- to date and the 19's were stuck on. Prior to me, the car had three previous owners.

I must say the 19's do grow on you. I have had a few people comment on them already.

E270 CDi is a fantastic engine. Probably the best balance between performance and economy.

Update:

My Father has borrowed the car for the weekend.

A 120 mile journey from Leeds to Newcastle recorded a 32.1MPG figure as of this afternoon. My dad drives with a heavy foot.

Finally got above 30's.

Driving style is the biggest factor in consumption. Mine is showing 35mpg over the last 4000 odd miles, I consider it very good as my Volvo averaged 22mpg over its life, and the A class averaged 37mpg.

Never forget these are 1.8 tonne cars tuned for refinement and performance, with automatic gearboxes that don't drop to neutral at rest. I've seen 50+mpg on gentle cruises up the motorway with minimal traffic but 20-30 mpg town, 30-40mpg out of town is normal and acceptable for my style of driving.

As you get used to the car it seems to get better, also the car gets used to your style too.

If i'd wanted 45mpg average I'd have bought a Passat - the most economical car this size that I've every driven. Dull and noisy though.

Sorted!

Just cleaned the MAF out..

What do those illuminated segments indicate?

I was playing with the cruise control to see if would have an impact on the mpg. I set it to 70mph.

I noticed a difference with cruise set at 70 too.

Useful on long M'way journeys

Even without the cruise i was getting above 35mpg.
