I can still see his smug look at what must have been my obvious shock at his attitude.

So can I, having read your florrid description earlier in this thread. :)

The point I was making is that when people are rude, or even just angry, it's often for a reason, although we may not appreciate what that is. Responding in kind is only likely to exacerbate the situation, whereas a calm, measured and polite response will usually defuse it to the point where a civilised conversation can take place. I tend to try to see things from the other person's point of view - otherwise known as giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Agree with that.

Police are trained to rise above anger etc and deal with situations as they arise without inflaming them. Not all members of the public have the same discipline or training. But I think we should have an expectation that we can be spoken to in a civil manner when going about our daily lives without interfering with others.

When I spoke to the Police who investigated the incident and my complaint they accepted immediately that I had done nothing wrong and could have taken no action to avoid the situation. I was indeed sitting a stationery queue of traffic surrounded by other stationery traffic. My only escape route (bad phrase) was the hard shoulder which I left for the police to use. Why they chose to stop on it I have no idea.

I was not rude to them at any point.

Respect is earned through the deeds that others witness. How many witnessed that incident I do not know. I do know that another person did take the time to report it (not with my knowledge).

I had an incident back in 2009 when I was pulled over in my bmw as I had the Khanda sign on my number plate. After getting out of my car, that's after I made him ask me politely only then did HE SAY... "WHY IS YOUR MUSLIM BADGE ON THE NUMBER PLATES"? Yes he stopped me cos of my colour. Yes I went from nice to f**k you, you racist bast@rd, in his face.

You do know it's illegal to display any other motif than GB or the European stars symbol on your numberplate, don't you?

The Khanda is a Sikh symbol, a fact apparently lost on the boys in blue.

Just wondering how did you get the Superintendent to issue a letter of apology without you actually complaining to the police....?

I actually made a complaint that very day!! Took a couple of weeks to get back to me and asked what I wanted to do.. all I said was "give him a b0ll0king". This was also logged on his file.
Im not one to make a fuss unless it is physical violence. Then again my white friends sort that stuff out for me. Top banana ;-)
