I'm 'down sizing'....and leaving MB

Its a bit more than some body panels. Under the skin the S type and XF are more or less the same car I believe. The XF is based on the S Type, which by no means is a bad thing.

has the XF even been euro ncaped. If its an old design it may lag behind the german big 3 when you need it the most? I do not know and can't easily check as the office web filter works in weird and mysterious ways.

The XF has not been tested. But if/when it is tested I would be amazed if it was not a 4/5 star car. All major European OEMs design cars with crash safety in mind, with millions spent on computer simulations to predict and optimise the cars.

Typically when platforms are carried over the front longitudinals and floor panels are the key parts. For a new skin to be mounted new A/B & D pillars are required, all of which are internally reinforced to aid with safety.

It's a myth circulated by motoring journalists that carry over platforms like the XF are old technology. For example, the XF has an all new front bumper beam, made from laser welded cold-rolled Boron steel which is then hot stamped. Many OEMs use cheaper pressed steel spot welded together.........some major OEMs even have no bumper beam!

Sad to see you go. Should we say Tata for now.

No, I think the OP said JAGUAR, not TATA.....

If ever a car traded on its history more than the present or future, its Jaguar.

If you go by looks alone, then its fine, but if you scratch the surface................

Stands by for a severe flaming..................

I agree with you on this but not so much the old technology, I don't think it is a good looking car at all, especially from the front.

A neighbour has one on his drive, but the guy 2 doors up has an XK on his drive, guess which one draws the admiring glances.

Probably yours.................

Hi all,

I'm certainly going to stay with this forum so I can 'slag' you all off and vice versa (nothing much changed there then ;)).

I don't really care much about where the chassis came from because sometimes the old adage 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' applies but there's no doubt the (Ford) engine beats the current MB 320 V6 CDi hands down.

Of course other cars may draw more admiring glances but I couldn't give a fig....I have bought what I wanted...warts and all (custom paint job is 'warts' :D.)....as all of us do?

Ultimately it's just a means of getting from A to B...but you only live once as I'm closer to 'Nissan Micra' (OAP) territory I deserve a 'fun' sports saloon until then (as long as it doesn't fall apart ;))..... XF may have come first in JD survey overall but it came 85th for reliability (first year teething problems, hopefully).

So it's not a 'Tata' but you can have some nan'o's :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

Cheers,

I walked past a diesel Jag in Tesco's car park as it was started up & it certainly was quieter than mine, very impressive.

Would expect a V6 to be much quiter though?.... You have a 220?

Hi,

Picking XF up on June 25th :D :D...I'll post some piccies after then.

Went to Castle Bromwich the other day to see production line etc.....it was pretty impressive :D :D but only saw XF bodyshell assembly (and XK finishing lines etc.) as new XJ currently shares 'finishing' area (with XF) and, until 9th July, remains top secret .

The tour (couple of hours) is free and open to all so if you want to see first hand how cars are constructed give them a ring (Judith on 02476 205 716).........I'm sure that MB production lines are pretty much the same.

Cheers,

The XF is all old technology and nothing more than a 30 year old basic design in a new suit.

Even if this were true (and I don't believe it is), I have to say - what a suit!

Not only does it look great, but the level of standard specification is extremely high, and compares very favourably with other cars. Even the "base" model, with a 33k list price, includes leather and satnav.

It's also a dream to drive :-)

I am jealous!

Did you see the camo paint, still on the factory from when they built Spitfires?
And Spitfire island?

Best not to mention your c-class has 1982 190E rear suspension?

Hi,

The basic composition of XF (old technology ) is as follows (see: www.carpoint.com.au/reviews/2008/large-passenger/jaguar/jaguar-xf-6467):

"Originally, the XF was to follow the XJ and XK in being all-alloy. But it soon became clear that development of a new, higher volume sedan - around 50,000 a year - in aluminium would add a year to the process. Jaguar management understandably decided it was more important to get the XF on the road quickly.

Hence the decision to reskin the steel S-Type (XF and S-Type share just five percent of the body-in-white, mostly in the floor pan) while integrating the XK's aluminium suspension. Jaguar says 25 percent of the body is high-strength steel, though compared to the equivalent S-Type models the 1771kg base V6 XF weighs 9kg more, while the 1842kg blown V8 weighs an extra 47kg. If the body was all alloy, engineers estimate a reduction of around 100kg.
"

Evolution is a proper refining process and the most important thing is that the evolved product 'works'....and it does for me.

Thanks Ted for the Spitfire Island mention...saw it but thought it was some abstract sculpture

Cheers,

Hi,

Just driven XF to Dealers so have included some 'piccies' (pre-PDI etc.).

Lunar grey Jaguar XF Portfolio 3.0D 'S' with reversing camera and 'Selena' 20" wheels (see next post).

Cheers,

like the wheels .. they suit the car very well

what colour is the interior?

Looks lovely!
I've been looking at and driving at some 09 pre-reg 2.7 Premium Luxury XF's. There are a number of high spec ones about brand new for £32k.
I'm very tempted when you compare that to the cost of a simliar spec new E class...I'm sure you will enjoy yours:D
