Any ideas please? Someone I know has a 320 SL, which has had the gearbox rebuilt. A couple of times, changing from D to R, the box has remained in neutral. A diagnostic check suggested a CAN problem, and could not be cleared. The following readout was printed:

Motor Electronics 2

P1681-154 Crash signal implausable current and stored
P1747-062 CAN fault not defined

ETC - Electronic transmission control

97 Test fault (ignore) stored
136 CAN comminication with control unit instrument cluster is sporadically disturbed stored

ICM- Instrument cluster with maintenance interval display

B1040 Fault in CAN communication with control unit MR engine control stored
B1041 Fault in CAN communication with control unit Traction systems stored
B1042 Fault in CAN communication with control unit BAS brake assist
B1745 The serial interface K1 of control module AAC to control module instrument cluster has -- + stored
B1755-001 The serial interface K2 of control module AAC to control module instrument cluster has -- + stored
B1755-000 The serial interface K1 of control module AAC to control module instrument cluster has -- - stored

Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance!

Check the gearbox control unit for oil contamination. The electrical plug on the gearbox car leak into the wiring and can work its way into the control unit giving strange faults. Sound a bit wierd but it happens.

Thanks Alibally, I'll pass it on.

What is the month and year of registration ?

Which engine - straight six or V six ?

It sounds like a low fluid level to me.
