Internet security - Autotrader - all to read please

:D
Crockers

MI5 will now know that postcode came from the computer you used, and so you will be watched from now on.

It's ok I used the wife's................... sounds cheaper than a divorce..:D

Whats the sentence??:bannana: :bannana:

yes simonsmerc, andy_k had done that on a PM which I would have prefered you to do also, name blanking or not and whether the information is available on the internet or not in future please, others may not have known what website to use to gain access to all my details - you just told them!!!

Andy_k however went further and proved there is far too much information available on the internet, I will be changing a few things soon, certainly something on whois as that seems to be the no.1 stop for people,

thanks guys, I never knew, I still wont post from aututrader with my postcode and will be even more carefull with whats goes on the internet,

Removed publicly available information. Although anyone who wanted to "have access to your details" would either know how, or could find out how in 30 seconds with Google. What you state above is the concept of "security by obscurity" - don't tell people the name of the web site and then they might not know (!!!).

Back on topic, I completely agree with and applaud your suggestion not to post links to Autotrader with the obscured post-code in - good show :-)

Thanks,

I am going to have to do something about the registation details of my website,

Are you one of those people who refuse to give anyone your bank details, only to be embarrased when it's pointed out that that information is printed on every cheque you write?

For the Autotrader website I use the postcode SW1A 1AA - for the Houses of Parliament. Its nice and easy to remember.

cheques? dont use them, certainly wouldnt recommend posting them!!

There is a subtle difference between "anyone" and someone you give a cheque too.

not really......

if for example you pay for something by cheque in a shop (unlikely these days I know but some people still use them) it will be passed from person to person and department to department before it finally gets to the bank and even when it's with them, they will post it to the main clearing banks.

I prefer not to worry too much about having cards cloned, accounts hacked etc. It's impossible to stop a determined thief and just taking basic precautions like not writing your pin number on the back of your card will deter most amateurs as they will prefer to move on to the next soft target.

worse case scenario, I get a card or two cloned. They are all insured, the banks act quickly these days so why lose sleep over something that may never happen?

Andy

I agree with Andy, I dont write my pin number down anywhere, let alone on the back of the card, thats too obvious, I try to protect myself from the opportunist thief, the determined ones are very organised, I have had cards cloned, all money returned, no problems so I dont worry about that too much but I certainly dont give my credit card to anybody, I put it in the machine, even if it means going to the machine or them bringing it to me,

My orginal post was me trying to help people protect themselves by not posting their postcode on the internet, as some people have proved thats the least of people problems as Andy could have easily cloned my ID within 3 button clicks of my website!!

However I will continue to be vigilant and to attempt to stop the opportunist thief, bless them,

tee hee, I registered a web domain to 10 Downing Street (to deter the average "whois" searcher) and it got closed down !!!

Apparently I was comitting and offence by registering a domain to an address that's not mine

The "joke" was even funnier considering the name of the web site was **** of the week :D

If the site was registered with that address was the paper certificate from nominet sent there as well? Depending on how long the domain was up I suppose it makes little difference as it takes them about 2 years to send the thing out... ;)

the site lasted about 12 months before it got "suspended" - they contacted my hosting company who in turn passed on the letter to me and explained in a very light hearted way why they had done it :D

I still think it nice that somewhere has taken the time to submit this post but aren't we getting a bit paranoid? If we know someone's name and the town they live in they the free directory enquiries will gives us their details, or even the voters register. am I bothered?

I guess if someone could find out my bank details I would, but otherwise life is far too short.

regards
John

What on earth are you on about?

He found your address using whois - so what? Anyone could find millions of names and addresses using the 'phone book!!

It was a bit more than that as Andy said, im certainly not posting the results or how he did it!!!!

Perhaps you should take your DOB out of your profile?

If I did that, "nearest first" would be 250 miles away!:D
