is this worth a 5 hour drive?

When I was looking for a new car, I was warned that the 300-24 engine wasn't the greatest, Mercedes did, and that a 320 engine was smoother. On that basis, I've never driven a 300E-24, so can't make a direct comparison.

That example doesn't have air con either, but I don't know how you feel about that.

Also, I'd be interested to know what the reserve it, the auction being at £1000, as I type.

Darren

gt-83, your link isn't working, as it appears to have 2 http:// in there.

I have an H reg 300E-24v - 150k on the clock - and whilst I can't claim that it 'drives like new', it is pretty good - if you put your foot down when doing 60mph, it will just keep accelerating past 120mph, then I chicken out and lift my foot off the gas (not in this country, of course!). Around the city, it's very smooth - like all 124s, there is a pause when you put your foot down, whilst it 'gathers itself'!

The engines on these are pretty bullet proof - the only work done on mine is to replace the top cover gasket (last year) - if they are looked after, they go on forever - 176k wouldn't worry me a bit - if it has a service history

Value wise - I don't think mine is worth more than £1000 - but then, I have the usual cosmetic rust issues and no leather seats!

I would be tempted to wait and see if it sells this time - if not, go and look at it (provided he drops the reserve to about £1000)

Cheers
Andy

meant drops the starting price to less than £1000, of course!

thanks Andy......my old 300e had 220000 on it when it "died".....perhaps im being to keen to replace it!

Seems like alot of miles for that money. Have a look at this one:

I know its got a Kit and wheels that would be a matter of personal taste, but I reckon at just 67,000 miles, would be a better bet, and I reckon youd easily chip loads off the price. Not many people are hunting for 18 year old 3 litre petrol engined cars these days!!,
As regards the engine, I have a 300-34 and they are mighty powerfull, and of course not prone to the wiring loom issues you can get on the later 320's. Only one issue of course, but in its favour all the same!.

Cheers

please...dont mention the wiring loom, i think i have to replace mine:( i did look at that listing, but thought the guy was probably looking for £2000, and yes im one of a handfull of old fools who loves 124s.....you have confirmed my thoughts on the start price though

I phoned him up the other day and , as with most traders, didnt want to get into bartering on the phone, but said come and see it and we can talk. He appears to have a reasonable amount of stock at the moment, he's taken this in direct from a Mercedes dealer (so he says, and seems perfectly plausible given the rest of his stock) so I doubt he's paid more than book for it which would likely be south of a grand, for a quick turnaround he may well just want a 'nice drink' out of it. He has put a new dizzy cap and HT leads on it he said, but I doubt hes spent much so it really cant owe him much. Just IMHO of course!

I wanted to go and see it for myself at the weekend but the Mrs was not impressed at me having another "bl**dy hulking old car" on the drive :o, so go fot it!

Cheers

thank you, thats very helpfull, i could combine the day and take the kids to southend for the day............strange that my missus makes the same remarks as yours!!;)

Might I suggestthat you get the car and change the missus. :D

We've just changed from a 200 to a 300 and her reaction was 'this is nice, do they make them any faster?'

That why I married her.:)

Let me be the first to say 'I told you so,':bannana:

But come on, we need more details. Wassup wid it?

yes you did ay so, but i had to look,
i wouldnt mind but i spoke to the guy before i went

is there any rust i asked, bearing in mind that the listing says no rust whatsoever........there was!!
does it leak any oil i asked,,,,,no said the seller......well it does, one drip every second, completley covered underneath.
does everything work i asked......of course yes was the answer......what he meant was everything except the locking, alarm, sunroof, rear windows....and probably more, but id lost interest by now!

im straight with people, and i expect the same, i told the guy on the phone it was a treck for me, but he said it was a "stunning" car so thats why i made the journey..............ah well my search continues for a replacement still

I feel for you and how many people here said they would happily buy a car unseen provided they asked the right questions?? I dread to think how much this has cost you in time, money and face!!! The next time you ask your wife if she fancies a five hour drive to see a very nice looking 124!!!! I wonder what the answer will be? ;)

Thanks for letting us know and hopefully we will all take note of this gezzah's E-bay details and remember he speaks with, "Forked tongue!"

Perhaps we should nominate this person for the:
