Italian Speeding Tickets

Palfrem -
I fear that you are harking back to the golden age, things have gone downhill since then. It is diabolical the way the eyeties and frogs behave nowadays. It all went bad with their stupid revolution and that mountebank Garibaldi. It really takes the biscuit. Grrr.

How dare Johnny Foreigner attempt to impede the - and some may say God given - right of Her Majesty's subjects to do what the hell they like on the roads in Europe.

It's bad enough they expect us to drive on the wrong side of the road let alone be aware of every piffling village and their obscure "congestion charge" rules. It's a deliberate scam to enrich the local despot (Mayor) by fleecing the beleaguered British tourist. Usually a decent sort of chap who is kind enough to leave his beloved Blighty on missionary duties for a week or so and spend some of his hard earned Euros in their bankrupt states. Build wider roads and more car parks for God's sake. There must have been an EU "grant" you could have applied for in the good times. I'm sure the Mayor's brother would have built them for a good price.

I wonder how many such fines were issued to Brits between 1939 -1945 ?

Indeed. How very bloody dare they. I'm so indignant that I have dropped my monocle into my glass of Pimms, and ruined the waxed set of my moustache. Bloody foreigners!

Indeed!

Why, if it wasn't for our forebears they'd all be driving on the right and dancing to Germany's tune.

Oh, hang on a mo..........

i had a speed camera flash while in Germany about 5 years ago, luckly i was in my own car, so i never got the fine, but i think things may have changed these days, EU laws etc, i also got a parking ticket in sweden, same car cost £25, i never payed that... and never received a fine....also got a on the spot fine in spain for pulling out of a junction in front of a van, even thought the guy let me, but the " charisma bypass" Guardia Civil policeman 200 yards away said he had'nt.. paid up 60 euro.. because as he warned me "if you don't pay you will be arrested"... sometimes i think they see us as easy money.. left me with a bad feeling about spain and i try to avoid going there, so in the end it has cost them thousands in lost money..sorry spain.. blame your police not me....just a thought

I dont know if we are dealing with Europcar or the Police. We havent received any letters or tickets yet, just that europcar fee.But if that is a fee for giving our info to the police, then the police will ben intouch from now on?
Do you have any idea what happens for non-european people?Because we go for passaport check-in when we enter Europe and if they put a notice that we havent paid a ticket in their country under our names, then this may cause a problem?
Or if cannot reach us does the police go to Europcar and say, ''i dont care, this plate in signed under your company name and you are responsible for paying this ticket''

So many qouestions i have, but this is the first time i face such a problem and dont know what to do, dont want to pay either :(

dont worry about it, it almost certainly wont cause you a problem with passport control.

Just wait and see what comes in the post (it might take several months) and if they are ZTL tickets then they come from the Italian municipalities and not the police.

Then you can decide what to do.

Re: some of the earlier posts about people not getting tickets when driving their own car abroad - I think there is a big difference between a hire car - which was hired in that foreign country and driving your own car which was registered in the UK.

I think it is much easier for the authorities to get your details from a local hire car company than from the UK DVLA, which may explain why people driving their own cars do not have problems...

Just read the terms and conditions of a recent car hire agreement from Italy. Basically it states the rental company will charge an administration fee of 60 euros per fine and then claim payment of the fine from the renter.

As a truck driver across the whole of Europe I have learned to live with fines (many unfounded) but Spain and France really know how to extract the urine. I have been fined €5000 in France for not carrying original documents ( I had photocopy's) that someone else needed as they weren't mine to carry. I was impounded so I had to pay or suffer penalties that would amount to even more for late delivery.
In Spain I was fined €906.52 for not having records of driving even though I was parked for a weekend break and not driving (I couldn't prove I was not driving while on break :-/) again impounded and having to pay to get deliveries completed without incurring late delivery penalties
I have now given up driving abroad as it is just so hard to stay inside the law when they make it up as they go along, and the fines are just too high to make it worth while any more! :wallbash::wallbash:
