Latest firmware Upgrade for 211 COMAND

I'm certainly not defending the dealers on this issue, but on the other side of the debate, I'm grateful that I can upgrade my equipment to the very latest specifications.

The final straw for one of our neighbour's selling their Jaguar was when they had to pay in excess of £250 for a software upgrade to the gearbox.

Less than £10 is not the end of the World and I'm fairly confident that if the dealership had the CD, they would install it. Everytime our vehicle has gone to the workshop it has always had the very latest service upgrades installed. I have never asked for these, never checked to see if they were done. I have been informed this issue is not a required servicing requirement, I have asked on this thread for other folks experiences.

It is easy to suggest a garage should do something for nothing, but I wonder how many of us would work for nothing, or actually pay to work on someone's car?

John

Adding 5 pounds to the cost of the oil change and running the update as the oil gets sucked out may seem just a little too obvious.

I am looking high and low to find out which version of the update brings the software up to that level on the older units.

Miro,

I got the info from Richard's mercupgrades site, and did my W211 (Jan 2004) with:

Software Service Update Comand W/S 211, C219
A211 589 13 22 00

On the disk it says:

SW-Rel. 21.090
SW 30/06

I have found that the differences so far are:

- ETA is displayed on the front screen as per 2007 models.

I've just had the CD delivered by post :)

All we have to do now is install it.

The instructions on how to do it are on the rear of the Jewel Case.

It's so simple John really mate should take you / your wife no longer than 5 mins and 90% of that is waiting for the machine.

PM replied mate
:D All done,

Thanks very much.

We are now the only folks in South Devon with an oldish 211 with this option. :D

A very special thanks to Dan, SargeBenz, Rchard, Migabc and all the other folks I've forgot to thank.

Kind regards
John

I have been asked if there is any easy way of knowing if your car has the latest update?

Prior to installing the CD, we could press buttons and get to an ETA, but with the Upgrade installed we have the option of having it on the 'Front End' :)

A picture paints a thousands words:
ETA.jpg

We just tick the box for whatever default setting we want.

John,

Have you spotted any other differences since applying the update ? I've not found any so far... just ETA on the front screen :bannana:

:D :D We are talking about 'She that Must be obeyed'

I help her program the system before she goes out, and if the charming lady in the little COMAND box tells her to take even a different turn.... then it's my fault :) :)

I doubt if she would notice any improvement.

As the CD was upgrading it displays what parts it is dabbling with (upgrading?) but don't ask me what.

I would assume the mapping software gets updated every-time we buy a new DVD, what we installed merely updates the innards?

Ah ok. The difference that makes the biggest impact is that now, finally, the head unit works with Linguatronic properly and you can call up the address book by spelling the name.

In the older versions the address book reverted to an internal listing from the email client software. Long story.

As Mercedes gradually threw out the old system they
- blocked Bluetooth from the head unit
- wrote out the SMTP / POP client
- wrote out the internal address book
- enabled better operation with linguatronic
- enabled better phone book lookup by name spelling
- disabled the keypad workaround for "tv in motion"

There are also many other subtle user operations and information screens as offered in the NTG2 which is the generic name for the GPS in A, B, C, CLK, R, ML, Viano, Vito, Sprinter, Smart (late model).

My TMC sometimes shows the jams on the wrong side of the road. I read that a flash upgrade to the audio gateway will solve this. If I make this update being discussed here, do you think traffic jams issue will be resolved aswell as having ETA displayed?
Many thanks
Harvey

The wrong side of the road audio gateway update is available as a service update (there is a service recall about this) You need the April '05 AGW update.

Your dealer should fix this for free.

Just to get my head clear on this...are we saying that users of the 5.1 mapping disc can get permament ETA after upgrading the head unit software (for £10) without buying the £300 6.0 DVD? Also, if we have the pre-2005 AGW version (with the traffic jams on the wrong side of the road) is this just an annoying presentational glitch, or does it lead the TMC re-routing software astray (ie. unnecessarily re-routing around jams on the other carriage-way and/or letting you get into jams in the direction of travel)? By the way, is there an easy way of checking what version of the AGW software you are running?

Give me a week and I'll let you know ;)

I have the latest mapping software, but the ETA CD is a completely different issue and I would be amazed if it didn't do what your suggesting.

Yes this works. The head unit upgrade should allow ETA for 4.1, 5.x, and 6.x DVDs. I've tried switching between 5.1 and 6.0 DVDs to see what the differences were, and ETA was present on with both versions.

Hope this helps.

Version 6 Disc

Can anyone help please?

Just received from Mercedes-benz, version 6.0 DVD part # A211 827 95 59, for W211 command aps unit. Original disk, working perfectly in the car is Version 2004/ 3.0 part # A 211 827 52 59.

When I put the new disk in the navigation unit in the boot, following the instructions it does not recognise the DVD and puts a message on the screen "insert navigation DVD in boot".

Any suggestion to get me going gratefully received.

I cannot see any reason why the proper DVD will not work. Is the COMAND a factory fitted option and have you had all the service upgrades?

I would try to find another E-class and try out the DVD as that would be my first thoughts.

Good luck
John
