Latest firmware Upgrade for 211 COMAND

John,

I will be interested to hear how you get on with your dealership on this one. I will need to take mine in as well as the loss of this functionality is really annoying.
Unfortunately my wife will not be going up to Exeter for quite some time. :o

Regards
John

Mines due into the dealer for a service in about 2K miles so I should have mine in to a dealer in a month or so. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks very much.
Ours is a C+ at 3950 miles:o :)

An update on my earlier post, I am no further forward. MB Tonbridge as helpful as ever today but had not heard of the latest upgrade required, details of which are well posted on these forums. They contacted MB on line to discover the latest Software / Firmware disk is required from Germany which they are getting (3 to 5 days) to make my command W211 September 2004 work with the latest version 6 navigation DVD. That in itself is a surprise as other dealers seem to have it so why can't it come from MB UK? It never ceases to amaze me that dealers don't make these enquiries prior to the appointment particularly as I had advised of fellow forum experiences and given them a 10 day head start. Now I have to visit twice.

I am not disputing what your being told, but our vehicle is a February 2004 vehicle (Built in January 2004) and it had the latest version 6 navigational DVD installed long before we had this latest firmware installed?

It is possible that installing the latest firmware upgrade might solve your problems but what I'm suggesting is that it is not a requirement and if you have been told it is, then I strongly disagree and would suggest that very, very few owners are aware of this firmware upgrade, but numerous owners will purchase the latest navigation disk?

John

I agree with you John. I can't however understand why the disk does not work neither did another version 6 disk they tried or so they told me. They also said the command upgrade disk they had has worked for E and CLS class cars. Do you have any other ideas, can you confirm your Navigation version 6 disk part number?

If you have tried a different DVD, then I'm wondering if one of the older service upgrades might be required, but I'm clutching at straws. My vehicle came with version 3, then I went onto 4.01, then 5, 5.1, then finally 6. The latest firmware upgrade was installed after this last upgrade and I'm sure I'm not alone in having version 6 way before the firmware upgrade. The boss is out in the car at the moment but I'm sure there is only one current version of the DVD.

My version is shown as 2004 / 3.0 Mercedes-Benz. When you upgraded your DVD does it load new software as well? I have asked the garage if a jump to version 6 is to great a step and wait to hear back from them or indeed from another member reading this.

John,

I think you are on the right lines regarding firmware. I went the same route as you regarding disks. Now that I am on version 6.0 disk, I can only go back down to version 5.x. When I put in version 4.01 it is not able to read the disk. So somwehere along the way, there's a change in the way the data is handled from the DVD in the boot.

;) It certainly looks that way :) and I feel sorry for riowy because it sounds like he has version 3 of this software which was replaced in March 2004 by 3.1, then in the summer it very quickly went into the version 4's?? No way should a September 2004 car have a January\February 2004 DVD unless the car was built in January and stood in the showroom for several months which is unlikely, but possible.

If the firmware upgrade fails to solve the issue then it might be worth your dealer simply installing version 5, then trying version 6?

Lots of suggestions, but nothing concrete.

Good luck
John

Dear John and Serge,

Thank you for your thoughtful replies.

By putting the chassis number into the MB Club Russia site I see my car was delivered 01.07.2004 I assume to the UK but could be factory ready. It was first registered in the UK on 10.09.2004.

My version 3 disk is part number A 211 827 52 59 and was in the car when I got it so assume was as delivered in 2004.

I have emailed MB Tonbridge and asked a few questions as you suggested and await their reply. I am never sure how keen they are to do the leg work but let’s see how they reply.

Kind regards

Richard

An Update:

My question to MB Tonbridge.

Further to my visit yesterday and checking with some respected MB UK based forums. A thought and perhaps you could ask MB technical as well.
My DVD version in the car that is working is shown as 2004 / 3.0 Mercedes-Benz. Between this disk and my new one version 6.0 there have been 4.01, 5 and 5.1. When you upgraded your Navigation DVD does it load new software as well? If so it could be that I would need some of the interim upgrades as a jump to version 6 may be a to greater step.
It appears that people who have taken the 4.01, 5 and 5.1 steps run version 6 without problem and without firmware / software upgrades
Please can you advise, thank you?

Reply from MB Tonbridge

A very good question. To our knowledge, the nav dvd's don't load any
software. I agree that it is interesting to hear that others have had
no problem if they have upgraded from a leter version than 3.0. The
document from DCUK has instructed that the newest software upgrade disc that we have ordered is required to allow an upgrade from 3.0 to 6.0 ? I still wonder, as you do, whether trying the later version discs would help. Unfortunately, we don't have any of these discs available to try, unless you know anyone who has? - unlikely though.

My question to MB Tonbridge.

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any used cars on your forecourt from say 2005 / 6 with a DVD in the boot we could try?

Reply from MB Tonbridge

Yes, I guess that we most probably do. It's a little manic here this
afternoon, so I can't physically check at the moment. I'd suggest that
we wait until the correct software upgrade arrives, just in case.

I wonder if a personal visit might be more productive IF you have a decent relationship with this dealership? I don't know the rights\wrongs of borrowing a DVD from a different vehicle but perhaps if you could get a technician interested in resolving this issue a personal touch might be worth trying?

They certainly seem concerned and fingers crossed you get this issue resolved.

Regards
John

I think they deserve credit for at least showing an interest in the problem.
as far as
To our knowledge, the nav dvd's don't load any software.
goes, I think the display on the headunit that reads "installing firmware" when you put the new Nav DVD in the boot for the first time rather disproves that.

just installed v6 disc. All works well. Still have not had firmware upgrade. Can't seem to get thru to dealer that the firmware must be installed from disc. All they say is that the computor shows your car has all updates installed and that v6 disc installed latest software!!. upgraded fromv5.1.

Just to add my two-penneth worth to this thread. I went into Tony Purslow Guildford today to get the AGW upgrade done and to pick up the new head-unit upgrade CD that I ordered on Monday (£7.72 incl VAT - a new low I think?!). They also insisted on doing a couple of other service upgrades that were showing as outstanding, including an update to the gearbox software that required taking the car to 80mph and then allowing it to slow to a complete stop without touching the brakes to recalibrate it. (Anyone heard of this before?). While I was there I also took advantage of mercedes new offer on the web-site of a £20 pre-holiday check which included a free continental driving kit of GB stickers, headlight deflectors and a fluorescent jacket (which apparently is now a legal requirement in most countries including France just like a warning triangle and bulb set). For once I was delighted with the Purslow service which included a wash and valet.

While loading the head-unit software (which took over 10 minutes) I was a little concerned when, after it was 50% completed, a warning message came up that it "CAN-T READ" the nav DVD player in the boot. But after hanging for a minute or so, the software update just switched on to the fourth and final part of the upload and then completed successfully before ejecting the disc. Everything seems to work eg. ETA permanently on main display - does anyone know if the missing section is unusual or important?

One final moment of panic when I found I couldn't turn off ""Veronica's" voice in the usual way by pushing and holding the mute button while she was talking (love her though I do). Eventually discovered that one of the more subtle changes in this version is that you have to just touch the mute button briefly to achieve this now.

All in all, a good day with Mercedes I reckon

Glad the install went OK for you.

Are you sure you had a warning message and it did not mean reading the CAN

I wondered about that too, as I had a vague recollection that "CAN-T" might not mean can't It is just that while it was "hanging" neither the top (high frequency) progress bar counter was moving - ie. it stayed at zero, nor the bottom (major milestone) counter which stayed at 50%. Then it suddenly jumped to about 70% or 80% on the bottom and restarted rapid counting on the top before completing (to 100% on the bottom). So it seemed to me that one major section might have been missed out. I haven't tried to redo it though, so just hoped to get some feedback from another pair of eyes watching closely as its going through the same process, as it would be easy to miss if you look away.

When i do the updates i tend to leave the cars alone and do other jobs while i am waiting so i cant remember every message shown but i am 99% its telling you that its reading CAN-T (MOST)

Just had the CD come in the post - did the update - took about 10 minutes. all done - much better !! Thanks!
