MAF Sensor - clean or replace?

You could try cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol, but don't hold your breath on it working.

Cleaning my MAF sensor with a cotton bud and some alcohol did work for me - two years (?) later and the car has never dropped back into limp-home mode since.

My coolant thermostat had also failed coincidentally and the engine temperature stabilised as soon as I had this replaced.

So, in answer to the question, I think that the time taken to clean the MAF is worth it - it seems to have saved me from having to replace it.

OK, thank you both for your prompt replies.

The MAF sensor seems quite expensive to me - at least for what it is and when you compare it to that it costs in the US - and so I think I'll ask the garage to try and clean it in the first instance.

I'll let you know how if goes.

Fingers crossed.

Cheers

Hi, just new to the forum. Iv only used here for information and found it great, feel it only fair to share my experience.
Had MAF sensor fault on my e350 cdi 2010.
Got quoted £523+vat for whole monifold as the sensors come internal on my model.
Removed the air intake monifold and sprayed with CRC cleaner as recommended in an earlier post.
Plenty of oil and crap flushed out of the monifold. Also cleaned the MAP sensor as it was easy.
Reset all sensor parmeters, Car run for 100miles or so with no faults before light came back on however after another 50 mile or so faults cleared them selves and problem solved!
Thanks for advise and guidance.
Seems these sensors are tempermental, try reseting a few times before replacing part is my advice.
