major gearbox problem, need advice

Thats sounds like how my gearbox wnet and it was the torque convertor breaking up, not cheap, quick fix go to merc dealer buy new gearbox filter £7.50 drain gearbox oil, remove sump 6 screws, pull of old filter fit new filter and refit sump stick in exact amount of oil as you removed not the old stuff new cheap atf 3 will do for this test then try to drive it.

This kept mine running for another month or so whilst i hummed and arrred deciding what to do.

Approx 3.5 litres of oil buy in 5 litre can for approx £20.

Pic of removed filter after i had cut it open, the gunk is the torque covertor clutch plate remains.
With hindsight i should have sold it as soon as filter changed as its totally put me off the car.

If you do decide to break, I'd be interested in the wheels and a couple of other parts.

cheers

i appreciate the help and advice from you guys but i just cant be ****d with spending hundreds of pounds trying to fix a car that only cost me 2grand 3 weeks ago.

the car has a good avantgarde spec and im proberly better off making my money back in parts i think.

im not sure what the AMG wheels are called i have but they are the ones that are almost a solid wheel with the five holes making them look like wide 5spokes. they are in very very good condition, a few very slight marks on the outer rim but they will make any merc and do look stunning with 2 tyres being only 3 months old and the other 2 with very good tread still.

id take £800 for all 4 wheels with tyres!! or maybe near offer.......

ill sell the whole exhaust system inc cat, (two pipes as its a v6), mid pipe and rear box, all in very good condition with no leaks etc for £300 or will seperate for the right price.

will sell all various interior parts, any body parts, suspension, engine parts etc etc, anything that is wanted please just let me know by phone call or text. i will always consider offers on any parts as i just want to try make my money back asap!!

i will be selling things on a basis of you tell me what you need, give me a day or two to remove from the car and i will send you the part!!

ist a facelift model in paint colour 341, so any parts needed just let me know.......

dan.

also have full grey leather interior in very good condition, will sell as a whole with door cards for £400, maybe near offer.....

also have a sevic 7" touch screen cd/dvd/radio player in full working order with a very good picture quality for sale in the car, will sell for £200....

Don't think they are genuine AMG's mate .... no engraving.

Honestly, i would get it sorted out ... have you even haad it plugged into a STAR ? it could be something really simple.

Ditto. Far to good to break!

ahhh only now youve mentioned the engraving on the wheels have i noticed thay arnt engraved:mad:

i REALLY thought the wheels were original, now i see they arnt:(:(.........

now seeing you guys telling me to sort the car out, its making me think i should aswell, im just sooo skint at the mo so it will be a month or more till i can afford to get it put on a star.

im so in two minds now, i do love driving the car, i can just see it being a couple of months till i can afford to sort this car out......

what to do what to do...???.........

who thinks i could make back 2grand quick in parts with this car???

or shall i persist and fix the baby???

i cant decide, i really cant, maybe more so cos im just peed off iv only had the car 3 weeks......

Fix it!
You'll forever be sorry if you break it. How long will that take to break and realise the return do you think?
As said previously it might be something simple to fix, but you really need a professional opinion. Find yourself a good MB indie who has got STAR and at least that should give you a definitive answer.
Good Luck!

It will take months if not longer to return 2 grand.
I have broken 4 cars for spares now and every one still has parts sat in my shed waiting to be sold. One of them, I only made £75 in parts.
You have lost a big wedge with the wheels not being genuine.
What would probably sell quickly are the wheels (£400ish maybe?) and the interior (£200 if your lucky) then for months you would be stuck with an expensive store room on bricks.
I know how you feel, ive got a C class estate that needs loads doing, and ive come to my wits end many a time with the lack of funds to do it, but then I think do I want to risk buying an expensive lemon, or wait and fix the faults on a car that I know??
The only people who make money from breaking cars is scrap yards and people who can do it in quantity. Sit back, wait for the funds and then get her back on the road. Getting it read on star should only cost you about £30 from an indi, for a little more you could probably get someone to come to you.
For all you know it could be a £10 part thats knackered. Until its plugged in you will never find out.

Honestly , take a week off , relax until the New Year , few beers , whatever .

Plot the car up on the drive and come back to it objectively in the New Year.

Post up again to remind us and someone may be able to advise you better , and recommend someone local / mobile with a STAR ( as i gather it won't drive to an indy ) ...

Forget about it for now and enjoy yourself, its horrible thinking that you've bought a lemon , but for now just enjoy the festive period and look at it in a week or so.

You may end up being pleasantly surprised. Until it's plugged in , you won't know.

i had problems with the gearbox on my C43 AMG and a friend of mine recommended king automatics in Epsom(the chalk pit), they did a superb job and were very well priced. i had to use the AA to get my car towed there but it was well worth it. i dealt with a chap called Trevor, The number for the garage is 01372 728769.

Get the codes read first.

small progress today, spoke to an old friend of mine whos dad ownes a independant merc garage, and he has a diagnostic machine which im assuming is a star machine, suppose to be a 60K bit of kit!!

so hes letting me know when he can fit me in next week, so only a week or so to go now before i can get my fault codes read and see whats going on exactly.

and he fixes gearboxes aswell, so finger crossed for next week, if miracles do happen, it may be a simple fix instead of having to replace the gearbox.

dan.

Fingers crossed for you mate !

cheers guys, ill keep you posted and ill prob be posting up my codes to get more of an understanding of what they mean and how to go about fixing the box or whatever else is wrong!

dan.
