Meet Silvia the s211 e55 7 seater

Video time lol

After watching this and i think understanding it, As i thought i have a Leak in the line to the Charcoal canister and tank or tank itself, since this will not through a fault code as the engine is off. And bypassed when On due to the other check valves.

In real life the MB plumbing is slightly more complicated . :confused:This thread is for a 2005 C class v6 but I doubt if the system is very different .

Thanks Grober, now i understand how the system works, i know which line to look at, In my caseit the larger bore pipe in my photo, it should have a leak either were/at the joint it attaches to by the tank, Or further up towards the Canister in the rear wing, I can be damaged anywhere along this line and with the fuel level exceeding 88% the car will not show this as a fault code.

Between 25% and 88% the perforation is so little the car cant tell if the fault exists as it within tolerance.

The "Suspect fuel leak" i believe is a Red herring, this occurred when i over filled the car, Excess Fuel travelled back down the Return from the filler neck, Spitting out of the Return on the Nearside smaller pipe This is where that single drip of fuel came from.

Since refilling and NOT overfilling i haven't had 1 drip of fuel anywhere. "hence" i strongly believe its the large vent pipe at issue.

WELL..... UPDATE TIME!

Borrowed the Bore scope, And with the help of a Friend we went right over everything, The Tank has a Leak in the Centre Channel, its soaked, and has been for ages, only coming to light when the tank is full, Driving it half full it wont be leaking. It's All dry around the senders and pumps. The tank will have to come out for further investigation, and replacement.

So i would just like to thank the Seller "Mr Fixit" THE FORUM member for selling me the car and disclosing the 2 ATF fluid changes only 100 miles apart before i bought the car not quite sure why you'd do that, Disclosing the gearbox issue, which he didnt know about even though every journey from cold was banging, and disclosing the fuel tank leak not like its a hazard or anything, you know being a 7 seater carrying humm children?

I've been very quiet mentioning the above didn't think it was right but unfortunately and especially after not receiving any "Gift" or the "something" through the post to my address that the Seller said he had.
I thought well you know Mr Fixit doesn't quite live up to his name does he? because this car is far from fixed?

It will be, I'm not going to mention the above member again he is now forgotten from my memory my Sick Son did send him a thankyou text though, before he has togo to Great Ormond Street hospital for his Operation.

Feeling a little sick inside, and far from saine but people should release selling the likes of the above vehicle does indeed have a impact on someone elses life and family. I know i couldnt do it. Line now drawn

^ Disappointing to say the least Gav. It's not the sort of thing forum members are expected to do to each other if done knowingly.

You are right though, get it sorted , move on and enjoy the car.
You really must stop trying to make the car "as new" though. It's costing you a bomb and you'll never recoup the cash spent.

I'll be thinking of your lad on the 20th:thumb:
It goes without saying I wish all goes well, as I know it will.

Gav I completely agree with you. Not in the spirit of the forum at all.

Wish your boy the best.

Finally tracked down the NHTSA REPORT that triggered the recall in the USA.
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/inv/2013/INRP-EA13003-61087.pdf

It makes for interesting reading.
All observed leaks by NHTSA were found to be at
the top of the tank from the pump, filter, or
the fuel filling limiter valve located at the top cen
ter of the tank. The fuel filling limiter valve is
a caged float located inside the fuel tank with an
external elbow that is connected to the vent
system, including the charcoal canister. During
refueling, as the fuel level rises and the tank
fills, the float raises and seals the air vent. Fuel
then backs up in the filler neck, and the fuel-
station nozzle shuts off.

I believe this is the large bore pipe that Mercedes refer to as the fuel tank air admittance line in some of their diagrams. You can see the plastic elbow and central large bore pipe in that picture you posted.
s-l1600.jpg

I'm going to guess that plastic elbow is possibly the source of the leak -see piccys on page 9-10 of the report --later tanks got a different elbow connection [colour orange] as seen on page 13.

In all this "tank talk" I forgot to wish you and your family all the best for your son's operation on the 20th of this month. This car stuff is all well and good but there are more important things in life as you are all too well aware. Anyway all the best to your family.

Best wishes to your son Gav and good luck with Silvia, hopefully that is the last of the issues with her and you can begin to enjoy her.

Gav are you sure that the issues you keep finding aren’t because your lad keeps whacking the car with a purple golf club?!

I wish him, and you, and of course the rest of your your family all the very best for the 20th. When he’s older you’ll be able to tell him that a whole load of people from the Internet, and whom he’s never met, we’re all rooting for him that day.

All the best to your lad Gav, his challenges certainly put life into perspective...

You really must stop trying to make the car "as new" though. It's costing you a bomb and you'll never recoup the cash spent.
This ^^

Just run it for a bit and try and enjoy it without tinkering on updating bits that maybe don’t need doing immediately, it keeps time and money in the bank for when something really does need doing pal.

Best wishes for the wee one Gav and sorry to hear about the fuel tank issue.

Is it a new tank or is there any possibility to repair the tank?

With it being fuel I'd want it fixed soon as so would just get the tank out and go from there.

Wishing your son well gavin, sorry to read all your woes with your current car.

It's a tough one buying a 10 /15:year old car not to expect problems but you have had more than your fair share!

As for a forum member selling a car to another forum member with faults it's their conscience..seemingly they don't have one.

Hoping you get this issue sorted and you can get back to enjoying the car. I agree with Lee replacing parts that don't necessarily need attention immediately.. I use to the same thing and when I come to sell I never really got anymore if I'd have left it and just done the basics.. so it's burning money.. but it's a bit addictive so I do empathise trying to take a car from 05/06 era to 10 years newer standard its not going to be cheap on a MB!

Best of luck

Michael

On checking that part no doesn't exist on the EPC that's because it looks like a "factory fit/replacement" part with the fuel pump and sender unit already in place ----maybe for those USA extended tank warranty issues. In the UK looks like you will just get the naked tank A211 470 25 02 as previously mentioned.:(
