Recently borrowing an A140 for a few days and it's one with the rather pointless design of a semi auto gearbox, that is, its like a manual but without a clutch, most of the time its fine and engages all gears normally but sometimes it won't go into any gear even if you try and force it, then after a couple of minutes its fine, got home today and now it's just stuck in reverse and there feels like theres no tension on the lever at all, the transmission itself seems fine when it works and the clutch doesn't slip so I'm guessing it's a problem with the linkage, is this common and is it a costly fix?, also is it possible to make it into a normal manual or would this be too expensive to bother with?.

Sounds to me like cable problems, father in law just had similiar prob on a corsa and that was the cable.

Not many posts on here about the a class but most things i read about them always seem to include gearbox problems.

Have you done a google?

I haven't googled it yet, thought I would ask on here first, I can see why there arn't many posts about the A Class it really is an awful car in my opinion, although this is an old one and problematic so I'm a littled biased!!.

There is a link rod that snaps off. Its only about £1. Have a look on top of the gearbox. It is quite obvious.
