Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

We made our first attempt at starting her on Tuesday but there was no sign of a signal from the CPS. Checking in with Phil at Extra Efi he suggested to make sure it was a Ford VR sensor, so I ordered one of the era of EDIS, and having fitted it yesterday, we tried again last afternoon. No tooth signal was being shown by the Megasquirt, so John decided he needed to fiddle with the location. This morning, before I got in, he centred the sensor more and swapped live and earth on the sensor. Fired up first time and no problem thereafter in getting it running each time on the key turn. It's rich, timing is out, the lambda is not getting up to temperature and the idle valve isn't yet programmed so it's not idling yet, but once it runs it can be made to run properly. No oil leaks or problems other than burning off a lot of stuff that's got on to the manifold (oil went in to the injectors when mounting the rail) but that's already getting better. Absolutely dead chuffed as are all the guys at Project Shop. In researching the issue last night, the MS diagnostics don't show the tooth signal if EDIS is running the ignition, so that I hadn't clocked.

John, sitting in a loan SAAB seat (what else could be more apt, Druk?), drove it to the Gerry the trimmer just along the complex, who will be doing the headlining next week. Once done, we can get all the glass in and do the interior.

Sharing its home for a few days, a Brough Superior tourer and a 20s Citroen.

Living as close by as I do, I keep thinking that I should drag my sorry a*se over to take a look, but I don't want to crash your party, Charles. Would you mind if I popped by some time?

Phil - whenever you want to, please pop by. This coming week little will be happening mechanically but just let me know.

What AFR map etc are you starting with Charles? Remember this guys thread on the M110 2.8 6 cylinder His maps might be somewhere to start? Are you going to use the megasquirt autotune facility or tuner studio?

For interest the various engine dimensions

M114 2,496cc bore stroke---81.7x78.8
M114 2,778cc bore stroke---86.5x78.8 bored out version
M110 2,746cc bore stroke---86.0x78.8 twin cam engine

all share the same stroke perhaps an indication their AFR fuelling characteristics [ not the absolute fuel volume obviously] over the rev range might be similar??? Just speculation on my part obviously  your megasquirt expert may have other ideas. :dk:

The ECU had a map in it from Extra efi to get it started which is considerably richer than I was expecting (but sensible). I shall be using autotune when we get the wideband lambda sensor to the correct temperature. Ignition timing is also important - what I expect we'll do is getting it all running a bit better, then have a serious rolling road session.

However, I'm really very pleased that once the correct CPS was fitted the thing fired into life so easily. It's a vital confidence boost!

One minor parts issue - the nearside front quarterlight was missing on the car and I could only find clear glass rather than the original tint. Simeon at Project Shop got Bespoke Privacy Glass to take a look and see if they could find a film near enough to the original.

It's a very close match, not 100% but it will not even be noticed on the car.

Jerry was busy cracking on with the headlining today. Looks like we are on track to recommence works (fitting the windscreen etc) early next week.

Some exquisite leather in the trim shop made in a hybrid of old and new techniques to get close to old leather. Gorgeous.

Some excellent photos there Charles. I feel I'm in the workshop in the picture of the coupe taken with the accent on the rear window.

It's interesting watching this happen, John. Most mechanics are up for most things but mention fitting headlining and they start looking at their watches and saying they really must be off. I'm pleased the German aftermarket one I bought is precisely spaced, fits and well put together, IIRC it was £80 delivered.

Headlining all in, stupidly I left my camera at home and my phone photos don't do it close to justice. Car is back with Simeon and the windscreen and rear screen go in mid-day Monday. This is excellent progress. Thank you Jerry at Inflex Interiors for getting this done so quickly!

No windscreen done today. If an emergency comes up that takes precedence and as mine is only fitting existing screens back in they have to wait. Hey ho.

Headlining much better displayed. The SAAB seat has now been chucked out as entirely inappropriate in a Benz.

Front bumpers going on

Side view. Getting these spaced was a bugger.

Front quarter light in and Zane fitting the clips that guarantee the door tops will get chipped and go rusty.

Rubber door seal now on. Quarter light had to come out to fit this. I wish I hadn't done my stripping 18 months ago, I might have remembered the sequences a bit better.

Front with plate on. Just need to fit the centre chrome strip and the rubber bumper trim.

Finally, rear offside window in and working well. The weatherstrip has been replaced by the nice velvet side of a window channel seal on both sides. It is way more effective than the originals.

Well the original did leave a lasting imprint there Mr DRUK!

What a fabulous looking thing, you'll get so many looks it will be embarrassing Charles.

A word on the bumpers. Both the main bumpers front and rear are lacking their rubber strip as it was removed for rust clearing and treatment, and re-fitting it is an evil PITA. I thought the bumpers would be fine but having seen them against all the other details on the car, I have decided they need re-chroming, a late but sensible decision. They've gone on now to get the car through the MOT and will then come off over the winter to be done when the car is laid up. They are sodding big bits of metal to move around.

Rear screen decorative trim now on.
