Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

Even if you don't manage to get it running on the D-Jet system (even running a bit rough would be a real bonus), get it turning over if nothing else so you can check for compressions and oil pressure. Any issues with compression across the cylinders then you can carry out a leak down test. That sort of only leaves the coolant system as an unknown.

Brake pipe was dropped over by Tony who also had a good look at the cylinder head (as did Tony2 and my other neighbour Dan - there are times I wish my neighbours had a bit more to do!).

I now have everything to fit the brakes, replace the bearings and fit the drop links so I'll give that all a go tomorrow, then I can turn it round and strip the other side. I now have enough steel wheels to go off in a batch to be blasted and powder coated and with the exception of the last wing, all important body stuff is now in.

I popped up to see Simeon at Simply Project shop (where we had our meet and who will be doing the mechanical stuff) - by coincidence his own E320 325i with an M20 engine was in, with throttle body off - it will need some work to fit but looks a good place to start. John, his project tech/mech will work on the car, and he will fit the Megasquirt set up - he used to be the development tech/mech for Tom Walkinshaw Racing, so is used to translating ideas into practise. I haven't yet mentioned I plan to move in for when the main work is done as I want to be there to help. Dan and Matt are 100 yards away in the same complex, so when stripped the car can be welded and painted on site.

I am now planning to get the car up there by the middle of April. The first item on the work schedule is see if we can get it going (the current camshaft will not be an issue) then get the head off for refurbishment, unleaded and combining of the better bits, and getting engine and gearbox out for checking and sorting.

Bore - I discovered Feltham radiators who were recommended for re-coring and very close by are no more. Does anyone have a recommended radiator re-coring specialist they have used (plenty on google but I always like a personal recco if possible).

Temporary work ban on sanding, painting or any dust inducing activities as I am singing in two performances within a week (amateur I know) and throat irritation is the last thing I need.

There are these guys. No idea what they are like but they made a video!

They actually mention Feltham--

Feltham Radiators - CLOSED DOWN - APRIL 2014

We were sorry to hear of the demise of Feltham Radiators in April 2014.
Feltham Radiators were a small family business just like ourselves, in fact
they were started just a year after Aaron Radiators in 1963.

Tony had used Feltham for years, needless to say he wasn't that current!.

I think I've found the guys who did the re-core of the Allard radiator and were reasonable, plus quite close.

There are a number of new ones for sale in Germany but none seem to fit the 250CE but do the 230.6, 250C, the 250C 2.8 and the 280CE. I'll interrogate the EPC to see if this is the reality.

Which got me nowhere as no rad is shown.

Part nos from epc
A1145010301 up to 022-000200
AND
A1145010701 onwards

also this http://mb.bolinko.org/wis/w114/Engine/110/20-420.pdf
would indicate two rad widths.
anecdotal comments were these changes co-incided with minor front end changes to external rad shell panelling and bumpers.

Radiator part number supposed to be embossed on the top header tank somewhere????

Great thread Charles - keep up the good work.:thumb:

I have fond memories of these cars from growing up in Germany in the 1970s. We never had a W114 but did have a W123 after the Citroen DS21 we shipped to Germany from Singapore when we first moved.

A Citroen DS plus a W123. What a lovely set of cars to have been motoring in!

I have measured those that look the same and mine is different.

So back to getting it recored!

The rad had a nice old-fashioned plaque shown below. As I doubt Woolston Radiators were Behr suppliers to MB, it looks as though the rad has either been replaced or re-cored at some point. Googling finds nothing about the firm. Interestingly though Woolston is on Merseyside and Tony told me he had been told the car had first been owned by a certain Liverpudlian of some musical prominence. Intriguing!

Nothing comes up on the EPC SEARCH WITH A1145010801 !!!! BUT THE ALTERNATIVE
A1145011201 for manual gbx cars is listed under the W115 model for the 230 and 220 D models and replaced by the A1145011301!! for automatics . Unusually for MB they seemed to chopped and changed their radiators a lot at that time maybe due to cooling problems?? People have fitted automatic gearbox rads and just blanked the heat exchanger coil connections but the whole thing is a minefield !

inputing to the kuehler site gives core dimension [mm]: 450x532x32

Kühler-Rath - Refroidisseur de voiture - Refroidisseur d'huile - intercooler - Combi-cooler - Hydraulique Coolers - refroidisseurs industriels - Air Coolers - Ventilateurs - Condensateurs - Compresseurs

ps just seen your post - does look as if your rad may not be the orginal.

Try as I might with my tape measure, my core works out bigger.

Cooling is always an issue on cars of this era (BMW probably came top for decades long persistence in fitting inadequate engine cooling) but try too hard and you end up with inefficient running. As I have an oil cooler too, I don't want to have to bodge things.

Can I ask- was the old vertical engine oil cooler attached the main radiator by brackets on the main radiator or was it mounted independently?

Mounted by brackets. It fits like a glove.

The rad is Beru, stamped with the MB part number, doesn't have any heat exchanger connections at the bottom. So I suspect that while it may not be original to the car it is doubtful that it is wrong, especially as there are three secondhand ones on Ebay.de with the same part number. Just no new ones.

I suspect they are mostly all fine, it's hardly as if this country tends towards the tropical! My main aim with new was to find an alternative should the quotes come back too high.
