Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

Life is full of challenges - especially when you have an older Merc .

Looks like you're facing a lot of the same challenges I had when stripped the 107. Very good engineering without the faintest understanding of rust! I can recommend Wurth Rost off Ice for particularly rusted bolts. And a grinderette. I weighed the front and rear bumpers at around 50Kg the pair - slightly heavier than the 8Kg of an MGB!

Completely off topic, but noticed you have a B10 3.3. Casually looking for an interesting estate, and can't help being tempted by this.

That car was up for sale for £2600 from a private, which just about made sense as he had not done any suspension work in his ownership so at that mileage it will likely need a total overhaul (about £2000 or so), bodywork is poor, and will no doubt need pixels done in the displays (up to £500). Engine will need major service, and is getting to the danger point for cylinder head gasket and cooling system will probably need overhaul. The guy selling it has done nothing to it apart from stick it up at a higher price. As a pre-facelift car it is also less attractive. I'm sure with work it will be a lovely car, but as a high miler you will spend more than its worth on doing it up.

Great cars when on song though!

A B10 Touring would be a great piece of kit. Fortunately I haven't found one yet - when I do I will be in a real quandary as to what to do!

My E39 Touring has been brilliant but the Alpinas ride so much better and handle so sweetly that a Touring would be a temptation

You mean to say you don't run a S124 ? !!!

I am surprised :D

suspension ..will likely need a total overhaul (about £2000 or so)

Make that about £3000 - much more of the suspension is Alpina supplied rather than BMW. That carries a very substantial premium (as I've just discovered doing two rear bushes - you can't get the bushes on their own, they have to come with the control arms, hence £550+VAT for the pair).

The next challenge - removing the heavily corroded rear bumper cross-member.

Help is on the way! Couple of days (at most) in transit.

There is an interesting thread [in POLISH ---google translate?? ]on how to obtain a copy of the vehicle data card from

Mercedes-Benz Classic Center der DaimlerChrysler AG
70546 Stuttgart
Phone: 0711 1784040
Fax: 0711 1783456
E-Mail: [email protected]
Homepage: Mercedes-Benz Classic Home - Classic Cars & Service - Mercedes-Benz Classic in Fellbach

You get a copy of the vehicle data card which pre-1980 have been archived on microfilm and are not the best quality but are the most legible. You need to supply proof of ownership and the vehicle VIN number

They close on the 20th Dec till early January

Mechanic friend of Tony has been to free up all the wheels, a couple of sticking pads but nothing serious. With luck my Fiat will disappear on a lorry today to go off for sale and then I'll have space in my garage. I think moving it will be the next piece of joy!

Meanwhile the Turkish vendor has been in touch and the first batch of parts organised. With silvered vinyl here today too, my evening job is to get a template cut for lining the fog lamp reflectors.

What fun this all is. It's more Blue Peter than heavy industry at the moment but it will soon change!

The white car is the same colour as mine. Fiat gone too, I now have space, just need to move it.

Today's homemade refreshments from Jill were oven fresh buttered cheese scones and double chocolate cookies.

Started work on clearing up the bumpers today. The removal of my 127 has given a decent space in the garage before the coupe arrives so I can work on these large lumps of chrome easily. The front bumper is corroded in the seam in the middle of the bumper, especially behind the rubber. I fear there is a lot of rust there as it is pushing out the rubber. If I can stabilise it and clear it without damaging the chrome great, otherwise it will be new bumper time. Until I have got the cross member off the damage won't become clear.

I have decided to adopt the low force and intelligence approach on the basis that brute force and ignorance have got me nowhere in the past. With the help of a forum member who has sent me some superb penetrating oil and tips I have soaked the bumper nuts in this for three days. This morning one came out with no issue and two are moving on the little side bumpers - as these move around under torque I haven't forced them, but given them another soaking as with the other stubborn nuts. As there are so many surfaces with rust on them - nut and washer, washer and bracket, bracket and nut, bumper and nut, I'm going to let time and the penetrating oil take its course.

People wanted photos, so here are some nuts, no screws mind.

The good news - five nuts out without any rounding or damage. Delighted with this.

bumpernuts_zpsf1bdd507.jpg

The bad news - one nut on the small under bumper was a bugger with all the other ones removed, the bumper was flexing and access was poor. Obviously I got the force at the wrong angle and snap. I shall have to drill out the remaining bit of nut, up til then I was really proud of myself, these were seriously corroded in. Drilling is a new skill to me too...

Bolts!

Is there any of the remaining bolt protruding - either side? Looking at the breakage I suspect not, but if there is enough protruding it is sometimes worthwhile removing a 3-jaw chuck from a drill and clamping it to the offending bolt remains to then wind it out. Only if enough protruding though.
If you have to drill try and level the remains of the bolt where the drill will enter (if possible). Helps stop the drill wandering. Bolts can be hard to centre punch but worth a try. If not, start the drilling turning the chuck by hand while applying pressure prior to energising the drill's motor. It can help establish the hole and even if it wanders at least it doesn't start a hole where you least want one.

The bolt sheared because the rust was tightening the grip of the tread.

iirc, ferrous corrosion (rust) is 12 * the thickness of the sacrificed metal.
