Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

Much more progress. Popped in to see Matt yesterday and the wings and doors are now in primer. Lovely new doors and one new wing mean no dings or imperfections.

Bootlid needed a bit more work, but that should go into primer along with the car and the bonnet next week.

Popped up to Colin today to collect a tiny number of bits - I don't like the quality of the aftermarket chrome trims I bought at the outset, so have the trims from his scrapper, and picked up an almost brand new exhaust from the car too, plus some other bits and pieces.
 
Nor can I but a few more months yet for the mechanical side and for me to fit all the trim. I'm hoping to get it ready for the March meet, fingers crossed.
 
I might take you up on that!

Yet more parts arrived today, 4 packages. I'm toying with moving into a hotel for some space.

I've been cracking on with polishing the cam cover over the last couple of days. Found that ever smaller grades of wet and dry are really clearing most of the oxidation, leaving the polishing mops a much easier task. Tony2 popped over to help try and restart the compressor. We traced it to a blown fuse in the plug but instantly a replacement was fitted it blew again, so it looks like a short in the power cable. Coincidentally he's ordering some high amperage cable for his boat, so we'll replace the power lead when that comes.

Dan wasn't happy with the surface of the boot lid examined it closely and decided that there was not a lot of metal there. Small welding job.
 
Apparently the car was put into high build primer (it helps smooth out all the imperfections of the older bits of bodywork I was told) but I was busy elsewhere so no evidence yet, my theory being that like falling trees in the forest if you aren't there work hasn't actually happened. Either that, or like the observer principle, my observation of the task changes its outcome*

It being a stinker of a day, rather less stinky than the poor souls on the receiving end of storm Abigail in Scotland, I am staying inside** with the task of boxing up all my parts into the requisite areas of the car. As far too many are merely identifiable by part number, I'm printing out the EPC page for each bit and labelling the parts with a simple number that corresponds to the part on the EPC diagram (thus labelled). There is only one flaw in this cunning plan, being me, but having been the School Head Librarian and the victorious (I'm in the top 4% of humanity apparently) recent taker of a spatial awareness test on Facebook, I feel that this exercise is most likely to be Immaculate in Conception and reality (therefore infallible). I might need to turn up when they are doing it, just in case like.

A very useful exercise it was too. I have found various bits that I need to order and two rubber mounts A1153260581 that the EPC doesn't recognise but look like the rear anti roll bar bushes.
 
Checked the SM to see which Megasquirt is fitted.

Looks like Megasquirt 2 running version 3.2.5.
 
Given the progress and the imminence of mechanical fitment starting, I decided to have a think about cutting the new firewall insulation to shape. Colin had managed to get his old out very well, so that is the template. The old material is pretty flexible so I think I'll template it in cardboard and then try that on the car before cutting the new material to shape. The material is a bit thinner, so I shall add a layer of dynamat behind it which should help insulation nicely.

I have a laser jig saw that will take fine blades. Yours to borrow if it helps.

Thanks Bruce. I suppose the next thought is actually how best to cut it. I was thinking more Stanley knife to be honest.

Serrated kitchen knives can be good (cheap ones) depending on the material. They tend to be better on corners than Stanley knives.

Count your fingers before and after.

Apart from a bread knife none of my knives has serrations.

I'll manage some how.
 
Sad news, after attempting a new power cable for the compressor, it continues to short out. Recognising that prolonging life from now will incur expediture on new (and expensive parts) with no guarantee of sorting the problem first time (a control unit alone is about £80), the best course is to buy a cheap one and live with it.

Getting the thing out is going to be a nightmare too...
