So the mystery deepens- is this your old unit rebuilt or another one you bought in Germany?

It's another one, bought complete in Germany.

The more I contemplated the box of bits in the garage, stripped from the original engine before I got my hands on it, the more it became obvious that piecing it together was not going to be easy, and only when assembled would I know what was missing. The scope for a lot of delay and expense was considerable, so I found a complete engine with everything in place (and with various parts, in much better nick than my own). I have already identified all the breather pipes, fitted them and ordered replacement bits, so when it goes up to Bicester in the new year, the final shape of the engine will be clear, as will parts labelling and it can act as a model and a source for cannibalisation. I can also plot the sensor and rail location for the Megasquirt.

Certainly looks to be in good nick and rebuilding an engine from a box of bits that has languished for a few years is always a nightmare compared to the rebuild-from-a-carefully documented stripdown scenario. The "Box of Bits" may still turn out to be a valuable source of spares in the future you never know?

A rare beast.

That's the second car I have seen described as a 250 which has had the engine replaced with a four cylinder.

Alternator size question.

The current (ha ha) alternator has a capacity of 55A. I am toying with fitting an electronic cooling fan for a variety of reasons (to be controlled by the Megasquirt), and this will probably be sized to have a peak draw of about 10A. I am assuming, ceteris paribus, that I'll need to up-rate the alternator by at least 10A and possibly more (better headlights, possibly a stereo rather than the single speaker set up) etc. The original battery spec is 55Ah, but there is plenty of room to fit a larger one.

It makes sense to fit a new alternator too - little point in finding one of uprated capacity if the passage of time has degraded that.

Does that make sense?

I doubt that more capacity for the fan is required - on the basis that the two occasions the fan is likely to be deployed are when wringing the engines neck during which the alternator will be churning out Amps, or when sat in traffic when the lighting load can be reduced to side-light draw.
Megasquirt current requirement?
