Hi all,

been a member for a while and browsed from time to time and you guys all have valuable experience, so I hope you can help. I have a 2001 ML 270 CDI & I've been luck with it so far, but at 127k I've got the well-documented power loss problem (it won't rev past 3000, kick down etc.). I'm limited in what I can do technically, but I've disconnected the MAF and tried it but had no improvement; there's no whooshing noise, so I'm suspecting the swirl valves. I've read about a mod that removes them & bypasses the EGR with no apparent side effects, but I haven't the time/expertise to remove & mod the inlet manifold etc. myself, so I'm looking for a good North Manchester based independent who can do this for me. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance,
Paddy

I think most independents will just replace the inlet manifold with a new one, rather than remove the old one and modify it.

It's a very labour intensive and therefore expensive job, so replacement will be the preferred option.

The only alternative would be for you to purchase and modify a used inlet manifold and take a gamble on it working, as you would get no warranty if you could find someone to replace it for you.

I had the inlet manifold and flaps motor replaced at Mercland on my CLK 270 CDi as it was leaking pcv oil at the flaps, but otherwise not causing any faults.
I also had all the fuel pipes replaced as it is recommended after all the dismantling involved.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated - tho it all sounds expensive, of course. I'll get in touch with the specialists & get some prices..

After much thought & cost weighing up, given the apparent swirl flap/MAF/EGR problem, I've decided the best course of action is to sell it on cheap. I realise that I can't put up a classified ad as I've not posted enough on the forum, but I'd like to offer it to the MB community first rather than just put it on eBay. An enthusiast could probably get it running properly again without too much extra cost or would be able to use it for spares, etc.

I haven't the time, space or tools atm to do it myself, so pm me if you're interested at £850 and I'll give you all the info I've got, send pics etc.

This is a genuine offer to the community first if there is anyone who wants it, rather than sell it to a flakey eBay buyer or bandit breaker type. I hope somebody out there can make use of it, if not, it's on t'internet starting at £950 next week.

Sounds like your motor is stuck in limp mode. If you disconnect the maf this will keep it in limp mode. The inlet manifold flaps will not effect the power you will just get black smoke on acceleration. Why don't you get it plugged into 'star' to see if fault can be diagnosed? the vehicle has only done 127k which is nothing on that engine. I had a w203 with same engine and 230k on the clock and no problems.
