Mobil 1 or Shell Helix..

My last service, local MB dealer used Shell Helix..Last year,they were using Mobil 1..
Which is actually better..or is there another brand which is actually even better.
54'plate W203 - C180K sports pack with Kleemann Header and KBOX..

I have always been told Mobil 1 is the better oil..but then again, that is what MB said before..so why Shell Helix now..

Given the corporate tie-ins, sponsorship and co-branding, I'm surprised MB dealers have are allowed to supply alternative oils to Mobil. Not all that unusual though. In fact MB Birmingham (owned by MBUK used to supply Castrol).

Helix is a common alternative to Mobil 1 amongst dealers. They should still be using the correct MB spec so I would say either/or.

Yup both are "premium" brands, either should be fine.

We use Mobil here, The last dealer i worked for used Castrol.
Either is fine as long as it is the right spec for your engine.

Most probably more profit in it than the Mobil.

Is it possible to get MB to put Mobil 1..rather than Shell..I personally feel Mobil 1 is a better product..
Maybe I might go to olly and sort this out..I am also now in need of changing my tyres..Back ones are going off..not so nice driving in the wet..

Mobil 1.... well when we developed the cossie race engine for the WTC championship we dyno ran our engines on mobile oneand found that after a power run it looked like a head on a pint of the black stuff... althou we were sponsored by mobil we used ...........................shell and decanted it into the mobil bottles!!!!!!

Its just oil, as long as its a premium brand and the right spec it doesn't matter. My technician reckons Havoline is the best....

Not the first person i've heard say that with oil sponsorship but heard things the other way around , i heard a rumour that the Quaker State sponsored teams in drag racing had Mobil 1 in Quaker State cartons

A mate went from using silkolene oil in his drag bike and when he changed to mobil 1 the turbos started to last about 3 times longer!!

I'd be happy with either oil in my road car to be honest

If you feel strongly about it why not tell your dealer you will supply the oil for the change. Many people do this already to mitigate costs since they feel the dealer overcharge for oil anyway. Most dealers are happy to accommodate you but its best if you can show you know exactly the grade of oil your car requires and demonstrate the oil you are supplying meets MB spec.

Get a Costco membership or ask a friend who has one - you can buy Mobil 1 0W-40 in 4L cans for £19.99 + VAT.

As a comparison, I believe Halfords charge £47.99 per 5L can, or probably £10+ a litre (easily) at service time from MB.

No Costco round here (and I couldn't join anyway )

Looked on the Halfords site. They're a bit cheaper than normal at around £38 for 4 litres of 5W/30 4L low ash or 5litres of 0W/40 .

Yet to see whether I can order it up and collect the 5W/30L for next week's service.....

thanks for the info..car will be 4yrs in nov..MB offer 15% discount..will double check on pricing..usefull idea as suggested to supply my own..
