Motorway speeding ticket for 80mph?

Very many hit the brakes upon sight of one of those motorway assistant guys in their liveried Land Rovers as well.

I wouldn't call them fools though.
Fair enough reaction if they were speeding and unexpectedly encounter a cop car ; but I agree wrong to panic brake if doing nothing wrong.

That was 1978 , and the primary reason I’ve stuck with Mercedes-Benz ever since : safest cars in the world.[/QUOTE]

I did say comparable cars, meaning all makes as not everyone drives a Mercedes. ;)
I think black is still black and white is still white but who knows on here. o_O

The one motorway patrol car now left in England, which the various police forces share on a random basis.

If only there was only one camera van the same...:D

I did see a 3 series with an unusual square on the boot pull a guy in front of me for tailgating on the M4 not so long ago.

In my post that Pontoneer was responding to I was talking about the black and yellow liveried Discoveries that the traffic cone blokeys park up on the hard shoulder causing the unenlightened to slam on the brakes.

You also get a rolling roadblock when they're trundling along the motorway at 60 and nobody will go past because they think it's a Police car and they'll get arrested. Not sure if they have these Highways Agency vehicles in Scotland though?

Maybe not, perhaps they have an alternative such as they do with their superior legal system.

No - we have BEAR Scotland guys in Transit or Sprinter vans who deal with cones etc - they look nothing like police vehicles , although do often have large matrix signs on the roof to warn of breakdowns, lane closures etc .

Thankfully , police motorway patrols are a regular sight on our roads , along with unmarked Corsas and Audi’s which take people by surprise.

Besides the well known safety camera vans , which tend to be easily spotted , traffic cops looking for speeders can at times be a bit more stealthy in their locations ( as our old friend *** found to his cost , but he was a tad over even 80 mph on that occasion ) .

AIUI , the ACPO 10%+2mph guideline is used here also : from personal experience the only two motorway tickets I’ve had down the years were for 82mph ( police ) and 84mph ( camera van ) .

I still do moderately high miles , although nothing like in years gone by , and my experience, both North and South of the border is that most people stay reasonably close to the limits .

I used to enjoy driving fast when I was younger : these days there’s too much traffic and the chances of getting caught are too great due to so many high tech enforcement devices , so I don’t do it .

"Down South" speed enforcement is almost entirely done by fixed cameras, average speed zones, etc. You do occasionally get unmarked cars looking for people speeding excessively / tailgating / undertaking / etc. but it's pretty rare now. And marked cars are practically unheard of - as mentioned if you see one on a motorway it's normally just because they're en route somewhere. There are definitely no regular patrols on the M25 or in the Thames Valley area (this was confirmed to me by a friend who's a civilian control room worker).

The Highways Agency (actually called Highways England now, which would explain why you don't get them in Scotland!) covers much of what police patrols used to do, other than enforcement. But I'm sure it's no coincidence their vehicles are liveried to fool a lot of people into thinking they are police patrols, and slowing down whenever they see one. They use 4x4s (typically Shoguns or Discos) rather than vans as they're used to move damaged vehicles (including righting upturned ones) in an emergency ... quicker than calling for a specialist vehicle to do it.

This 10% rule, where do the people stand who've been done for 31mph in a 30 zone? 10% does seem excessively out of tolerance and 31mph is within this 10%.

Nowhere - it's just a 'guideline', not a rule. 1 mph over the limit is an offence so you can be done for it if you're unlucky. But if there's policeman involved there will usually be something else behind it I think - driving badly in some way, winding them up when stopped, etc.

No, he doesn't drive a police car; he rides a Harley Davidson.

There are!. The police use an unmarked HGV to catch people using the phone.

Go along to Guildford magistrates court 5 & 6 on a Friday. Its full of driving cases. All the cases that are not suitable for a quick guilty by post and three points ;)

That's good to hear, but no routine speed enforcement by police vehicles?
There must be some patrols as I have seen quite a number of people who have been stopped by unmarked cars. The charge sheet shows what type of vehicle (marked/unmarked) stopped the motorist and the equipment used to measure the speed.

Cant recall the last time I saw a 'jam sandwich' sitting on one of those ramps waiting for miscreants to drive past.....

Out of interest ... what's the lowest motorway speed you've seen a prosecution for (where there wasn't some more serious offence involved as well)?

That's where the HE vehicles sit now ;)
