My new SL320 R129

Could always try a breakers mate if all else fails I think they are pretty pricey from mb

EBay seems to have them for £110 or so from the OE manufacturers. Gonna check fuse and make progress on this. I love electric aerials ... Eighties status!

Can anyone please confirm the aerial fuse location - it's an OE aerial I think so there shouldn't be anything inline.

All the rest of the electrics are fine. I will investigate the fuse later but otherwise it's time for a new unit off eBay...

I have seen this spec replacement aerial on eBay: "Hirschmann AUTA 6000 KE-F automatic electric aerial".

The seller has great feedback so my question is whether anyone has fitted one of this particular model? Straight swap easy?

Thanks

The list is minutely shortened...

Done the sun visor mounts. TICK...

Explored the aerial and realised it's generally packed in - found a Hirschmann on eBay for just over £100 - got to plan a slot to fit it.

Have just posted off an order for "Champignon" rib carpets from mercedes classic mats place...

Progress, progress ...

I am still driving around in the SL320 quite a bit … the garage for storing it is so tight that once in there it is not going to come out easily!

So the list of detail improvement jobs from my list above a few pages is getting tackled for those that are interested:

- Refinish the wheels in metallic silver powder coat (Birmingham City Powder Coaters).
- DONE - Fit new covers over the sun visor mounts (in process).
- Have two paint bubbles repaired on lower edge of the pan' roof ("Chips Away" or similar).
- DONE - Repair dash illumination (done - thread elsewhere).
- Remove, tidy and repaint the headlamp wiper arms (will do it in our workshop).
- BOOKED IN NEXT MONDAY - Re-connolise the backrest of the drivers seat as it is stained (find a Midlands specialist).
- IN PROCESS - IT WAS BROKEN WIRE AT HINGE - Repair non functioning rear centre brake light (explore, but have seen threads).
- NOT SURE IF THIS WILL EVER HAPPEN - De-badge the rear. (I love the slab look of R129s with just the MB star on the boot).
- IT'S OFF AND IT'S PAINTED STEEL - NEEDS BLAST & POWDER COAT - Remove and polish or re-finish the exhaust tip (seen threads).
- Clean carpets properly and scrub up dirty seat belts (will look for advice later).
- ORDERED - Buy new ribbed over-mats (from classicmercedesmats.co.uk).
- REPLACED WHOLE FRIED UNIT - EASY - Repair the electric aerial which is shonked (I have a new internal for it - hope it's not motor).
- Have the paint cleaned, polished, sealed (I have found a valeter nearby).
- CONNOLISER (ABOVE) WILL LOOK AT THIS - Investigate driver's squab heating not working. (hmmm ... all the rest is fine).
- AM THINKING MORE ABOUT THIS Investigate head unit swap as the Becker Grand Prix display is blue/red not MB orange.
- Restore the roof fabric - a job for warmer weather perhaps in the spring
- CONNOLISER (ABOVE) WILL DO THIS NEXT WEEK Replace the speaker-cover fabric on the doors

I have fixed the rear central brake light in the boot. I have just soldered in a repair section of wire into the hinge area ... Fiddly for fifteen minutes but another tick on the list.

Very satisfying ... next week some interior upgrades.

I dropped the SL320 off on Monday morning with a guy called Dave Tedstone over in the Black Country - he's a vehicle trimmer and restorer. He was due to redo the seat leather finish in cream. I collected the car yesterday after not much more than 24 hours and it really looks much improved. The seats are not new obviously with 117k miles on them - they are however now wearing a new-look colour finish. Dave also did the top half of the steering wheel. It was good value as far as I'm concerned - I would recommend him onwards.

I then went into Birmingham City Powder Coaters to collect the exhaust cowling/tailpiece - this wasn't originally chrome … more of a painted black metal affair that had gone grimy and a bit decomposed…! I wanted it shinier so it is now finished in a chrome look powder coat. Looks ok at £20 and really lifts the back of the car…

New floor mats arrived yesterday too by coincidence … they are in place and look just fine. I prefer the original colour way cream ones to the ribbed Champignon choice but the originals show the dirt too much in the bad weather. I will clean the cream originals properly and use them just for high days and holidays...

I am getting towards the end of my long list of bits and pieces to get this car tidied up and properly ready to be driven and look generally immaculate … (Although next year it will go up on a ramp and we will have a look at a full suspension recondition (all bushes, any worn parts, etc)). So to complete the clean-up, when it is warmer in the spring it will get a proper interior and exterior clean and detail which will work well because of all the broken bits and pieces being fixed now. It should be a straightforward job of paint correction and polishing, etc plus an interior scrub-up. I will wait to do this because I'm not sure I want to wash carpets and all of that before putting the car away damp for the winter …

So, the outstanding jobs on the general exterior, trim and detailing are now reduced …

Wheels need powder-coating to a bright silver finish … that will be done next week.

Two bubbles on the trailing edge of the panoramic roof need seeing to… this will be done in the next week or so. I will be looking for a midlands specialist… any suggestions welcome.

I am going to swap out the head unit as the Becker Grand Prix that is in there is both the wrong colour and quite valuable (eBay - £300-400) so it can be sold and replaced. I might go modern or alternatively get the same one that's in there but in the correct MB amber lights rather than VW blue/red...

Speaker grille cloths - they are going to be detail cleaned at some point as they are water stained and generally ill-fitting and mucky from boot scrapes, etc… They were going to be done yesterday but I wanted a totally stock cloth match which the re-trimmer didn't have. Better keep the originals.

Headlight wiper arms need to be removed, cleaned up and re-installed.

All-in-all I am shifting this little motor along … and loving the process. And I am probably boring many forum members along the way - particularly those with new cars who would never want to fix anything on their motors…!

I have been to the dealers and ordered a new foam squab for the driver's seat for the SL today... Although the current lower squab is in good physical shape, the heated elements have failed (although the back still warms up).

I previously thought that the heating elements were part of the leather cover but the dealer's schematic parts diagram showed the foam to include the heater element. So that's the bit I need to continue my mini quest of fixing everything up to standard OE spec.

The leather connolising guy who refurbed the seats a couple of weeks back told me that he found a burn in the foam when fixing the seats, so that explains that... broken element. I had asked him to have a basic fault finding look.

The dealer told me there were nine left in stock at MB and no more coming. However I think I previously read on this forum that they were already discontinued, so it turns out they do seem to have production runs now and again.

Hey ho! Looking forward to another job being completed next week - and the good thing is that this one was not even on my list because I thought I would never find the parts.

£200 worse off but very happy. I like heated seats in any car - but a necessity on open top motor with leather.

How big of a job is it to replace the heating element?

I have heard of people dismantling the seat and finding the burned out wire and replacing just that…

But the heater element is an integral part of the whole squab cushion which cost me £200+ … I only changed it for the heater really as it was in perfectly good condition. I found a video on youtube of someone getting it mostly dismantled … I then just worked out how to do the rest of the job myself. It was two hours of grappling and a bit of puzzling.

enjoy - all the best with doing yours.

Just to be clear … you can't get the heater element by itself … it is the whole squab or a botchy repair
