My focus is the w211 E class.

If the door cards show ruffled leather, as opposed to smooth and flat, is that a sure give away of Nappa leather?
To answer my own question, with the help of the VIN aspect from Teego and the brochure from 24 VRT:

Ruffles on the 211 means real leather, rather than cloth or Artico.

If you do a VIN search, upholstery starting with the following 2 digits means:
34x and 44x means cloth
74x means cloth and Artico
Y8x means Alcantara roof
14x means Artico
82x means normal leather
85x means Nappa

The 3rd 'x' number gives you the colour, but you can see that so I've not listed it out in full. Main three are:
1 black (e.g. 821 means black standard leather).
4 beige (e.g. 854 means beige Nappa leather).
8 grey (e.g. 448 means grey cloth).

Seen a lot of posts on forums confused by this. I hope this helps someone.
