New Megane is a lot bigger than I thought it would be.

Have you considered anything from the SEAT stable Ian ?

Yep the Leon is in the mix at the moment I had a Cupra diesel remapped to 200 bhp and it was awesome and still did 54 mpg :thumb:

My choice would be VW Golf 1.6 TDi Match.

I get up to 74 mpg on a run - reasonable speed or 58 mpg at constant 80 mph.

I'd second the Golf, although we have a 2.0TDI Match which goes like a rocket and still gets high 60mpgs on a run.

Out of the ones on the list, I ran a C30 1.6D for 70k miles in 3 years and it was great, no breakdowns rattles or warranty claims needed. Comfortable, different and economical, probably a bit old fashioned in comparison with a BMW 1, but should be able to get a cracking deal on one new.

Astra GTC is a great looking car and gets excellent reviews, so that would be 2nd on my list - a great effort by Vauxhall, sorry, Opel, if it had an Opel badge I'm sure they'd sell more!

I thought you said the DS3 was ugly, yet you are prepared to look at one of the ugliest cars with a cheap interior.

On a personal note I think the DS3 is a good looking car and the motoring press reckon it's one of the most stylish cars available at the moment.

Holy crap Ian I agree with DM about the Seat but the DS3 will be a piece of French crap too. Buy the golf and its the end of this matter.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder the DS3 looks like the love child of a Ford Anglia van and a Renault Vel Satis :D The motoring press should have gone to specsavers :D

Nothing wrong with Interior of Leon you get what you pay for it's a cheap interior in a cheap car

everything's relative :thumb:

Time to come into 22nd century, Lad...

Nothing wrong with British veal - go to any dairy farmer and you can have a bull calf for free.

I want to go back to the 20th :D It's also French which is another reason I would never buy one along with their apples, wine, lager, cheese etc... :D

nothing like having an open minded approach...

iirc, it was the Germans that tried to over-run the World in two wars in the 21st century.

You were making (some kind) of sense until you went against French wine and cheese.

I'm with you on this one Ian.

Who supplied the Argie's with Exocets. Who pulled out of NATO when they realised all their neighbours were in NATO and they would "bombproof" on all flanks.

I'm very open minded, I openly won't buy anything French :D but I must have missed the Germans trying to over-run the world twice since 2001 :dk::D

Having read the whole of this thread, I cannot help think that it is all wrong...
Financially, you need to minimise depreciation and fuel costs and there may be a trade off between the two.
However, the discussion is revolving around different cars assessed from a bloke's point of view. I believe that a member of the fairer sex will be driving this car and there are more important considerations....
1 Colour
2 Space for driiving shoes under the driver's seat.
3 Lots of cubby hole space for stuff.
Now I know I may well get shot down for this comment but in my experience of seeing how "they" buy cars - none of what is being discussed is likely to be on their radar screen.

Dittrich

Only one thing interests a woman in a car.

The colour.

They will find space for anything else like shoes and stuff. Usually in a pile behind the seat or stuffed in the door pocket. The door pocket is especially useful for uneaten sugar sweets that have melted and turned to liquid glue.

Depreciation will not be an issue based on discount and other factors ;) fuel costs will be

SWMBO is not a typical female and buys cars on performance, style and useability, her current car is over 400 bhp so she is well qualified as a petrolhead so when it comes to making her decision it will be made exactly the same as most of us blokes do and not based on typical female logic :thumb:

What, you mean..."Will the Birds be impressed by this"...??? :D

In the words of Kenneth Williams "ooh err missuss" or was it Frankie Howard ?
