Car made a very odd noise today, I had just driven 50 odd miles at around 50-70mph (Harrogate to Clitheroe), and was now in a 30 zone and looking for my customers site..

Whilst slowing towards a roundabout (no braking, just foot off the gas)there was a very odd noise which seemed to come from the front left wheel area - the best way I can describe the noise is if you imagine when you have a bottle of beer half full and you blow over the top of it ! (like a deep pitched whistle noise)

I went round the roundabout and was able to get the car to do it again under the same slowing conditions, but since then I have not been able to hear it consistently...

Car is due a service in 6.5k miles (so about 5 weeks) and I will mention to them, but I just wondered if anyone had any ideas ?

Wheel bearings start to hum at that speed, though once they start they continue to normally, saying that they can be difficult to pinpoint.

By jacking the car and rotating the wheel by hand you can sometimes feel the indentations made by the rollers. the wheel should be silky smooth to turn, if it feels a little vibrating, then it has gone

Owing to the sensitive ABS and speed singals sensor it should not be left for too long as it could get expensive.

See how it goes over the next few days, When one of my V70 bearings went it was hard to make it do it all the time and you could not hear it on some road surfaces, but it did get to point where it did it all the time over 40 mph

That sounds quite likely, as road noise would prevent me hearing it at over 40mph as you say. The car is only 12 months old so all should be covered under warranty and I will keep an ear out for it over the next few days as you suggest !

I just searched the forum because I have a very similar symptom, and found this thread. Did you get to the bottom of it and was it a wheel bearing?

Anyone else have an opinion?
