Older Cars Section?

Hi,

I'm sorry, I don't understand.

It's only my expectation, why would I complain?

I simply think people might be better served in a forum devoted to that particular brand for their sake as much as others.

Do you see what I mean yet?

Cheers,

Paul

The forum finds it's own levels - if there's a popular thread about Land Rovers then it's there because it's, er, popular.

I follow threads about other people's cars because I know the person and I'm interested on what they have to say, whether MB or not.

There's room for all, I'm sure.

The thread you're referring to has been posted on by long serving and active members of this forum, it's more a case of "shooting the breeze" than anything else.

I notice you've posted less than twenty times this year, maybe if someone such as yourself was posting about the "older" stuff then there'd be more activity.

I think that the answer to OP's problem lies within the title of each posted thread.

For example, if a new thread was about replacing W124 wings then the title should reflect this as, "W124 wing replacement" or similar. A title of say, "Pattern parts vs OEM" would be too broad for any meaningful search.

Of course, some topics spread across several models so thought should reflect this.

Agreed. This is the issue. Threads called "Oh no again", or "Can't wait til tomorrow" are not helping. :)
Just my opinion.

Whats wrong with Searching? for 14 years its been fine. :dk:

Yes, the search facility is invaluable - especially for specific's.
However, I do like to browse the headlines and open a post that interests me.

My original point was one of surprise that there were so may more column inches on a Rover forum than on an old garage, but it does look like the majority of it is chat rather than debate!

Cheers,
Paul

That's a little unfair because I think it is just showing how vibrant and popular this forum really is; even though people have gone off and bought another marque they (and I'm amongst them) are always drawn back.

I've not had a Mercedes for nearly ten years and I've never left - have joined other forums BMW/Rover 75/Lexus depending on car at the time but none are as good as this and I rarely visit even the relevant one to my current car

I'm not sure I quite understand that comment, could you explain and I'll try and respond.

I think there is a lot of older stuff and activity, hence my surprise.

Cheers,

Paul

You're contradicting yourself:
Why so little interest in an old garage - good for people who prefer the classics and good for those who don't?

My point is that if people (like you) who felt strongly about "old stuff" posted about them more then there'd be more activity on the forum about that topic.

As it stands, you make a point of singling out one particular thread that has contributors who are, in the main, active posters.

Hi SPX,
I’m very sorry that you’ve been upset by my comments, it certainly wasn’t my intention.
However, I think you continue to misunderstand.
I don't feel particularly strongly on the Oldtimer garage theme - it would be nice, but that‘s about it. I mentioned it in the old post for the reasons stated, then I looked at the replies and left it at that.
I saw the Rover post and thought it a little ironic and mentioned it in a breeze-shooting way in a general discussion. My reference to Rover owners finding kindred spirits elsewhere on a devoted forum meant that I expect that there would be more depth and breadth available for them. If I implied that they weren’t meant to darken our doors, so to speak, that wasn’t my aim.
I can't see where I'm contradicting myself at all, I actually think the points that you highlight compliment each other - because there’s old stuff and activity, I’m surprised there’s no interest - but that’s probably a moot point.
Sadly, I fail to understand what you're point is about active poster’s - was that meant to be an exclusive topic - minimum activity before comment? Perhaps admin could look at that for you if that‘s the case?
I would imagine that a meagre eight hundred posts might put me amongst the top ten percent or so contributors to the forum - two or three posts a week over six and a bit years. If it's only been once a week lately that have I’ve had something to say, do you think it should be written in a smaller font - or indeed, and probably more to the point judging by your replies - is less relevant than if it was written by someone who posts, for example, half a dozen times a day?

Cheers,
Paul

I'm not upset by your comments, I don't know you and you don't know me.

My point is, like I stated quite clearly earlier, that you bemoan a thread about another marque on this Mercedes forum, and comparing that to a seeming lack of discussion about the "older" stuff. So if there were more people posting about "older" stuff then there'd be more discussion and so on and so on.

And, again, like I stated earlier, I always come back to this forum; it's the first and best I've ever been privileged to be a member of and I have made many friends through this forum so I'm comfortable posting about vehicles other than Mercedes and until the day the higher ups ban it then I'll continue.

Also worth pointing out that the thread that offends you so is mostly full of photos of people's pride and joy.

Hi,

I think we'll probably not see each others point here!

It was the irony that got me, and it was that which made me pass what I thought was a light comment.

I'm certainly not offended by the thread, it's just a thread, after all!

Despite my Landcruiser, I like Rovers!

Cheers,

Paul

Land Rovers have their own fora and are not Mercedes Benzes.
An older cars section would be a good idea. At least three of us aren't wealthy enough to participate in the usual discussions about accessories that cost more than our daily workhorses.
