Ordered a Skoda today!!

Have you thought about buying an older merc for high days and holidays? A convertible or coupe perhaps. Might remind you what you are missing whilst in the Eurobox:D .

Personally I have heard nothing but good reports about Skodas - hope you enjoy it.

I have a Nissan skyline for sunny days

I considered a Vrs Estate and it nearly ended in the divorce courts with Mrs F saying you are not parking that c**p on my drive.

In hindsight she was right they just don't last and take high mileages well not from the ones I've seen anyway.

Couple of my friends have ordered the superb which in case you are not aware comes with a free subscription to Barge Owners Monthly

I think many Taxi firms would disagree with that. They think they are brilliant because they wear so well.

x2. Most of the taxi drivers I spoke to in Belfast ran either MB 211's or Sokda superbs for their durability. One fella gave me a run in his and got it as another driver had 200k on his and no quibbles bar routine work.

I'd have a superb in a heartbeat if it were RWD, its the only draw back about them.

Think it's back to the spec again, its like MB taxi spec, we holiday in Gran Canaria a few times a year and all the MB taxis last forever seen them with 800,000km on also more Skoda's are now appearing in taxi spec. Chalk and cheese though for ride and comfort but agree mechanics must be reliable

When I first came out to Skiathos in 93, all the taxis were Mercs. Mostly e classes. Over the last couple of years all the new taxis are Skodas...5 out of 19 taxi's. Apart from the 2 brothers with the S-class and an S 80 Volvo.

So basically out of 7 new taxis in 2 years and only 1 of them is a Merc. Food for thought.

Most turbo diesel engines should do 500k miles and a decent petrol engine should last more than 300k miles IMHO before major work needs done.

With this downsizing trend and fitment of Turbos (for petrol engines) this may not be the case due to the extra complexities of forced induction and higher specific outputs.

Anyway I digress, taxi spec parts must be able to be retrofitted for that extra durability. One fella in Belfast had a 203 220cdi that did 180k miles and he said it was a standard car that he bought 2nd hand. He said it was a good car and he wanted a E220cdi

A lot of taxi cars are private hire cars, owned and bought by private individuals. A friends father is a private hire driver in Aberdeen, and he has a bogo 2.5TDi Passat. Its done a fair heap of miles trouble free and is a standard car.

I digress again, if you're ever up in Aberdeen then you'll spy the new taxi of choice is a 730d. Must be getting them cheap down the auctions...

The Mk1 Octavias I have seen don't wear mileage very well - which is odd because other VAG products of the same vintage seem to.

I know of a call to a Skoda dealer to the effect "I need a new passenger seat because mine now has a hole through it ( ) - the dealer took the car details and asked if the owner could come in the same day - bemused, the guy asked if they kept seats in stock - the Parts Manager said "No, but it has the same interior as mine and we'll fit the one out of my car until your new replacement arrives next week..."

Much as I love (and I really do) my Mercs, I won't be persuaded to enter a dealership again and if you think they have turned the corner in terms of build quality, take a look at the 3 year old cars. :(

I hope you many trouble free miles in the skoda.

I had a VRS estate on a list a few years back but decided against it, While I agree your rust and service you have recieved is / was poor as a family of Merc driver owners over the years we have found ours to be great cars. We own all sorts from A class's to SL's.

There is something about driving or turning up anywhere in a merc. My ML is the old shape but with private looks 'new' people at work all comment on the fact I have a Mercedes. Its no dearer than their cars but its the perception.

Fact you lost a lot of money, that is life buying a new car, any new car. The only way to save on that is buy a cheaper new car or better still get an ex demo. fact is you still lose....

I'd rather lose sitting in my Merc :)

Looks like there could be a group buy for skodas though the amount of people 'looking' at them..... :) :)

Three year old ML has gone in today, for rust repairs, Im not very happy.

 Can you tell us any more about where it is?

That's a concern given that the W164 ML is supposedly one of the 'new generation' of MBs.

"No, but it has the same interior as mine and we'll fit the one out of my car until your new replacement arrives next week..."

Customer happy - no hole in seat.

Service bloke happy - new seat to replace the one that was starting to wear thin!!

I really hope the interior was coming out of a demonstrator, and not a motor he picked up at the auction!! :D

Skoda dealers do have a good reputation but I've twice been bitten by other VAG marques and have vowed "never again". I'm extremely umimpressed by daughter's SEAT Ibiza (Skoda Fabia / VW Polo) failing MOT at 4 years /34K miles on multiple points and both the dealership and SEAT thinking that that's OK.

One of my neighbours switched from many years of Mercedes ownership to a Lexus GS300 and he says his only regret is that he didn't do it sooner. Interestingly the Lexus and Skoda dealer around here is the same company.
Just what I did I only had a C-Class but the GS300 is a great car and I get more people saying (thats a nice car Lexus isn't it) I live in Bristol and there isn't that many about but it has all the toys and mega reliable.

i wish id done the same thing , drove the 2.0d 170 elegance with all the toys. Brilliant car. Lovely dealer too. :(

I was only saying to Mrs D on Saturday that given the price of unleaded is creeping up toward 90p, residents of Barnsley appear to be safe - for now.

It was Barnsley wasn't it??

Love the way you have spelled School

Mileage isnt that much of an issue i've done 60k in almost 8 years in my E class i'm pretty surewhen the car has long since gone to the great scrapyard in the sky the engine has a good chance of being ok.

Whilst you can change an engine its hard to exchange everything else becuase its rusted

That said its far from unheard of for E320 CDI engine to fail , i've heard of cracking cylinder heads and broken camshafts, diesels pumps, injectors issues , EGR valves etc etc

The 1.9 VAG engine is one of the best if not THE best and longlived engine on the market i dont see why they should be any less reliable depending on what badge is on the front

As for a barge i drive a E Class estate FFS, i'm in the market for a barge i have a fun car when needed , i want comfort and toys and somewhere nice to be
