Power car polishing / buffing / waxing

That last bit about paint thickness is copied from Dave_KG's post over on detailing world is it not lol. I posted a link to it in one of the other threads.

yes as he is the daddy and is much much better at explaining ethics as far as paint correction! Plus saves alot of time on a micron write-up as, as you can see is quite lengthy:thumb:

yep he sure is and he is one of very few people that is not far from me so that may come in handy lol.

This thread is really fascinating. I am seriously tempted to invest in a G220, but there are still a few things I am still a little confused about. I am sure all of these points have been covered already, so advance appologies.

With G220, some posts have said you need a transformer. However, there seem to be some advertised on the net which are 240volts. I assume Meguirs have now started producing European versions, so if I get one of these, I just plug it in and go?

Does the G220 come with everything you need, or do you have to purchase the various pad separately? If that is the case, would I be better off going for one of these kits that include pads and polish?

What polish do you use with these machines? Do they work with standard nxt generation polish/wax, which is what I use now, or is there a different type of "machine polish" that is required?

These machines are used for applying the polish, and then you buff off by hand - is that correct?

I read the thread about using these indoors only. I would be using mine on the drive as my garage is not big enough. Does that mean I would be wasting my time?

The videos focus on restoring an original showroom look. Do you use these machines for routine polishing? The estimate of 20 mins for an e-class was, I assume, for a standard once over?

Lots more things I will think of later.

Many thanks.

I bought a Kestrel DAS-6 from Elite Detailer a few weeks ago and have eventually finished doing my the other half's Toyota Verso. I'm not going to experiment on my car - that would just be mad.

I did the car one panel at a time by washing, claying, washing and then polishing.

I used the Meguiars cutting polish on the rear bumper where the dog jumps in and out. A lot of the scratches have gone and the remaining deep ones are now very shiny.
I then used the medium polish on the bonnet where there are some fine scratches. These are still there but I also created lots of holograms by polishing too slowly with a too abrasive pad - see that's why I didn't do the CLK. I'll keep working at this any time I'm bored.
I then did the rest of the car with the Meguiars finishing polish with some good results.

The results were OK but I wanted more. I then did the car with Duragloss Total Performance Polish and then with the Total protection polish. I like these products because even the bugs on the front just fall off when you show them water and it lasts for ages if used with the Duragloss shampoo.

I finished off the black work around the doors and windows with Baby Lotion (thanks Masmas) which worked very well. I think I spent around 20-25 hours over a few weeks doing this and the inside needs the same treatment as it is a tip. I'll have to get the wheels done as well but I'll need more stuff for that.

This car cleaning lark is very expensive.

One question - I read somewhere that once finished with the pads etc, they can simply go into the washing machine. I assume with no soap. Is a low temperature OK?

1. Go over it again with the fine polish and the finishing pad. Going slow is fine.

2. you can easily hand wash these in warm water and some washing up liquid. If the staining is stubborn, leave them to soak for an hour or so in a bucket/sink. Its quick and easy to be honest.
