Proposal to lower speed limit on A roads

Surely we need more trees then to keep dangerous idiots off the road..permenantly..

No cameras needed there.. ;)

Suppose this is Darwinian theory in action and gets the removal of these peskie camera's.

Plant more tree's, and that means we need more CO2 to feed them, so the NSL can be left well alone.

I like your plan. :thumb:

Chances of avoidance, none I am afraid :wallbash:

Reduced severity, all of them as impact speed is lower. But is it low enough. 2 cars collide @ 50mph, its gonna still be nasty (i.e. fatal). So whats the difference if they collide at 60mph.

Well 30% less kinetic energy is not to be ignored. The 10mph reduction may also give enough time for the driver to apply the brakes and reduce the energy further still.

My "ungreen" suggestion of removing tree's from roads wasn't completely in jest.

Have you been reading Sniff Petrol, or should I say sniffing petrol? ;)

What's that quote in post #42 then?

A different topic and sentence. Your initial query related to a sentence from one post only.

Don't drive tonight, you might find a tree in your way.. ;)

Wow..could even help with reducing the stopping distance enough to avoid a collision at all...

Wonder if 'them upstairs' thought of that..;)

Nothing beats a straight, flat, well drained piece of tarmac for a road. All that traffic control has been PROVEN to make it more dangerous.

There is an upper limit and there is a lower limit ... but there is no common sense.

Umm.. Haven't they already tried the other approach to no avail...hence the new measures..

The new measures are just another way to spy on the great unwashed, and raise a load of tax at the same time.

Harrass people off A roads onto motorways where you can charge a toll will be the general idea.

Don't for one second think this has anything to do with saving lives.

Just like "safety cameras" are actually revenue cameras.

Won't reducing speed limits help people to have less, or less severe unintentional road accidents, simply because in a given time they will travel less distance.

If we ban wallpaper, all the people who get killed or injured falling off ladders while putting up wallpaper will be saved?

Do folk really get killed falling from a ladder whilst hanging wallpaper? That's a scary thought; seeing as I have some to do on the hall/stairs/landing I'll use that as a reasonable excuse to continue avoidance

"While the increased popularity of power tools resulted in an estimated 87,000 injuries last year, even hanging wallpaper can be a hazard: it resulted in 1,500 people being taken to hospital"

Buy a crash helmet and body armour before even contemplating the job...

plant a tree either side of the ladder.....that should stabilise it :)

Just like "safety cameras" are actually revenue cameras.

But this is therefore great news! A purely voluntary tax. Wow if only all taxes were generated this way :)

now if people slowed down and bought hand tools would the same accidents have happened?

No, the obvious way to curb dangerous use of hand tools is to licence the use of such tools and at the same time create a data base of such users so that the government can create a controlling body which will need funding and hence allow them to fit cameras in every power tools users home to monitor any dangerous or illegal activity- creating a self funding organization. Of course if revenue is then high, the government can use most of the funding to aid other useful organisations, such as MI6 or possibly funding Brain washing techniques so that every human being in the UK would do exactly as authorized- no more- no less!!

The roads are safe with a 60mph and have been for many years. :wallbash:

Read what Nick has to say, he has a greater grasp of this road safety measures than most :D (money, interfering and spying is what its all about).

Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire have mile upon mile of roads that are open, flat and have excellent visibility, but the standard of some of the driving on these roads beggars believe.

Are these roads safer because they are flat and relatively straight? I would say they are DEFINITELY not safer than the very narrow, twisty roads that are here in Devon. The reason being that the drivers on these better quality roads drive faster than their ability can cope and the accidents they have are at much higher speeds.

We all think we are the best drivers that have ever been created and I guess those that have taken the time to take advanced driving lessons and apply the skills they were taught can then perhaps make that claim. BUT if we have only been driving for twenty plus years without taking any further driving development; then I suggest we should think before we offer advise. :)

I am an expert driver because I have been driving for thirty years only means you have been doing the same repititive task without honing those skills or improving your abilities for that period of time. It does not make you an expert driver :)

I am in favour of the SPEC type cameras that are placved in sensible locations and control the speed of traffic over an extended location.

The A38 in parts is to all intents and purposes a motorway, the only reason it is not is because it does not have a major road to support it. Hence it would be daft to lower the speed limit for that carriageway, but as i keep saying.... On the narrower roads that alck the visibility for safe, high speed driving, then 50mph is quite acceptable.

I was looking forward to having a peep but it asks for my e-mail address and I tend to steer clear of these types of sites :(

Was it really funny? :)

So do I...........but............

Do what I did and type in [email protected] (or something similar and utter rubbish). Just make sure to put @hotmail.com at the end.
It works.:thumb:
