Found a showroom up the road from me, which have 4x w202's one is a C200 Sport in sliver (I like!) and is £3999. My budget is £3400max.

As ive never bought from a dealer before, if I say I can pay in cash/ show them some faults (if any), what is the likelyhood I can get it down closer to my budget??

Do they normally add a few hundred pound to the price anyway?

Cheers
Khz

I find second hand car dealers, don't give alot off the price, and it is a Merc.., is what he will probably say what year etc. is it??
You can try though, it also depends how confident and cheeky you are...;)

Our A-class was on the forecourt for £4400, I paid £3400 by taking it away there and then paying on my debit card, no warranty, no new MOT no nothing, which suits me!.

A good way of getting a cheep car but you must check them out first.

I always try to do this with dealers, it works best when you know they have had it a few weeks and lets face it most dealers ask well over the odds.

Cool, so there is some hope. They might be all dogs, watch this space!

I got £2k Px on my old C Class It went on at £3k forecourt price the next day.

All dealers are open to offers. At the end of the day they need to shift metal to make an income so a sale is better than nothing.

See if you can get a competent mechanic or someone who knows their way around the cars to check it out for you under the pretence of being interested themselves, they can then walk away and give you their honest opinion of the vehicle. If their opinion is favourable then go to the garage and offer cash to take it away as is.

Do not bother with a warranty as 2nd hand car warranties are not worth the paper they are written on.

As a used car dealer, I would say this is the best approach. We always offer discounts for cars "sold as seen". We also welcome any inspection by independent mechanics.
Cash and debit cards are good incentives for a discount!

you should get a discount for on trade in at least.

£500 doesnt seem too OTT to be honest. :)

wave the old plastic under his nose , it works every time and don't be embarrassed about knocking them down they expect a little barter. get as much as you can out of him and when you feel he`s on his knees ask him for a air freshener

The trouble with getting an independant mechanic to examine the car is it lets the dealer off the hook regarding sale of goods act and the fitness for purpose act both of which are there to protect the buyer.

Once a mechanic has inspected a vehicle, the dealer can truthfully rely on the claim that as the expert the mechanic should have seen any apparent faults, and therefore he (the dealer) is not liable.

If you ask a mechanic to look at a car do NOT tell the dealer you are doing so, use it for your own purposes only.

I am talking as an ex car sales executive and an ex group business manager for a motor group, remember the law is a tool to help the buyer so use it.

BTW asking for a discount should be on the basis of no P/Ex most garages earn commission from finance companies, so in effect they lose potential earnings if a customer pays cash, that's there problem though, not yours, you want to ask for a discount as you have no P/Ex and I wouldn't have thought you were being unrealistic in monetry terms

As above, if you strip off the extras then you can always save a bit.. couple of hundred for not having a warranty, and a few more hundred for a cash on the spot sale...
