A mate is looking at an E240 (only because I got the S class :o). The only problem is:

Seller said:
ABS fault, needs new ABS sensor hence low price (only costs around £90ish to fix, the car locks in 2nd gear for safety reasons, but once the rear left ABS sensor is fixed, there should be no problems)

Does this ring true?

This could be true but would need properly diagnosing to make sure.

if it only costs around £90ish to fix why doesnt the seller fix it themself and then charge more for the car once they sell it.

i would steer clear unless its going very very cheap and then you would have spare cash to fix it up if its not the ABS sensor

My thoughts exactly. I've never heard of anything like that, though maybe Mercedes are different. Most car's I've been involved with just don't have ABS function when there's a fault in the system.

It's a loaded up 2000 plate E240 Avant Garde, black with black leather going for £1600

Tell seller you'll pay £1690 for it in perfect working order.

£1600 for an old 210 with issuses is about £1000 more than it's worth...

It's true.........If the ESP (ABS) system goes into limp mode, it goes offline and no wheel speed information is transmited on the CAN bus, this is critical info for the TCM, so, no speed info = TCM limp mode = no shift.

It can be a strightforward wheel sensor fault, but I've also had a couple with faulty ESP (ABS) modules at around a grand a pop, so more info reqd. including what DTC's are stored.

I am assuming this is an Ebay job if it is a private sale be really carefull

Steer clear I learnt my lesson with a small problem on a C200 Esprit when it was first started it had no power but turn it off and start again and it was OK.
Bought off ebay and I ended up spending £2000.00 plus on an ECU.

As was said if it is just an ABS sensor why doesn't he fit the thing and sell it as a good car,the trouble with t=====s like that on ebay they know it is an expensive job because they have probably had it looked at first so they unload on to some poor mug (like I was) and get lumbered with a large bill.

Why don't you email him and say you are interested if he fits the sensor and it works OK I bet you don't get a reply or he says he hasn't got the time so selling as seen.

He didn't bother in the end. Now he has his eye on an S280 :D

He also says the V5 hasn't turned up yet, which does make me think that he's bought it on the promise it's an easy fix, he's had a look and now decides it's someone elses problem.

Of course there may be a simple explanation to it all.
