R Class versus Q7

When I read all the advertising spill on the R-class I thought it sounded the ideal replacement for our estate.

Then it took to the streets :o

John, you are lucky and get my 1000th post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, looking at the R it is the ideal proposition for people who need to carry more than five people, and want a Merc. Taking aside the styling (I think it looks great in black with 20" rims) it is a natural successor to the E estate, but is spoilt by a seriously stupid price tag. Did it really need 4 wheel drive?

It should have been priced to compete with the E, not pitched as some executive, 4 wheel drive limo! Kids dont like facing the wrong way once they approach their teens, the R would have been a natural progression for many E estate owners with kids.

Come on Merc, sort this out!

the r-class is hideous. get the gl CLASS. The r-class does not know what it is. estate ,mpv, suv, ???what am i heeeeeeeeeelp

Agree, the R is a little confused, but is unlikely to be targeted by the green anti 4x4 gets!

Just like another of the new model Mercedes-Benz. It's nice that a manufacturer takes the plunge and designs these modernist vehicles.

I've never said this before   but I wonder if Mercedes-Benz should consider making an S-class estate? :D :D This vehicle would not look like a huge yukky thing on steroids, instead it would represent presence in a subtle Mercedes-Benz style.

Please..... pretty please.

Oh Lord won't you build me a Mercedes-Benz,
Especially an S-class
With a tailgate at one end :D :D

I remember our own 505 as kids, great car to carry loads of people and their luggage as well.

I have fond memories of the 2 504 Familiale estates we had when I was a kid. One was white with a black vinyl roof and with turquoise targa (plastic) seats. Sounds vile now, but very 70's! :)

I have seen a few new X5s, but they are just so big, they look silly.

Well said. I had a 504 and 505 family estate and in every way they were excellent cars. It is amazing that the ML and R class are so big and I suspect that they cannot carry with ease the same as teh old Peugeot s.

:D I'm positive the rear space of the ML, and GL don't compare to the 505. Depends on the configuration of the R, but I will simply say the rear space of the old Peugeot was cavernous. Butt ugly vehicle with a very basic interior though :o

Now if there was an *-class estate:rolleyes:  :D

It always reminds me of an experience I once had in a shop. "Do you sell 'X' please?" answer, "No, sorry sir, your the tenth person to ask this morning, but there is just no call for it!"

Why isn't there an S-class estate? Answer = "No, sorry sir, your the tenth person to ask this morning, but there is just no call for it!"

So they build the R-class instead! What an underwhelming success! Nice to know the designers have their finger on the pulse and they know what the public want!  Me thinks I should start screaming for my mummy, then start stamping my feet and crying? Trouble is the judge would definitely lock me up  :D

So when is the estate car version and seven seat version of the R class going to hit the showromms? Anyone know?

That V12 TDI Twin turbo will be just as popular as the Toureg V10 5.0 TDI thats out just now ( and when was the last time you saw one of those )

There are 3 4x4's that have any road presense . Range rover sport , BMW X5 and Mercedes ML .

In that order. Q7 is just plain weird looking.

erm..............I've got a V10 toerag (2005) and its great!
Very exclusive.

The V12 Q7 will be ultra-rare in the UK because it will cost mega-bucks and be pretty much the most non-PC car on the road.

and you might be forced to share a cell with her - all night long.
I have never, ever, done anything so evil as to warrant enduring that penalty
