R129 refresh

Sweet, ta Leigh, I'll give them a call. I'm going to soak the bolts in gasket cleaner over the weekend and see how they come out.

Just don't really fancy polishing up 160 bolts, even with a polishing wheel on the bench grinder.

wouldnt take long to put ten bolts at a time into a vice and then get a polishing mop on your drill.

The vice would look shiney too afterwards. :)

Hey mate, try Autodex in Slough for a quote. They do not have a website but all there work comes from MB of Slough.

I had my SL panels resprayed for around the £3.5 and the quality and service is very good.

mine needs some scratches fixed as well but sadly haven't got a spare £3-4k so will try to do scratch repairs instead using a local firm. am going over in next couple of weeks to discuss cost etc.

Time for a bit of an update.

At the moment, it looks like the gasket cleaner can't quite shift all the powdercoat (although I'm going to give it another serious bash). An abrasive wheel would, but also kill the chrome in the process.
Looking more likely that I'll give up and just run some stainless BBS bolts/nuts.

The woodwork should be done this week, then I can drop the wheel into d:class to be retrimmed.

Not had a chance to see the progress on the car as yet, sadly I'm flat out with redoing my living room in time for Xmas :wallbash: Might have something by this weekend.

ive got a nice steering wheel with airbag facelift style off my sl60amg you might be interested in.
Damn you got the AMG duck tail. I have been looking for 4 months now, nothing. I remember when someone was selling it here, i thought i should buy that, but i didnt have an r129 and was waiting for the right one.

Possibly on the steering wheel, but I have a nice wood/leather one in mid-refurb that I will probably stick with.

I have a line on another ducktail, but it's fitted to the car and I suspect trying to get it off will wreck it.

That would also be my suggestion, but that still leaves the issue of the corner pieces.

They can come of but you need to be careful as the glue is so strong, you might end up breaking them

yeah wood leather is best, that is what i ended up getting for the sl60 amg.

Originially It had a black facelift style steering wheel, i then fitted the silver arrow steering wheel but i cant help thinking its femine white and black.
I now have the black birdseye and black leather steering wheel 'sportline', yet to be fitted.

Picked up the wood today:

Which bodyshop did you opt for in the end, Andy's Autobarn or PhirmFX?

Cheers Dee

Wood looks good, how much did that cost you to refresh if you don't mind me asking?

Full respray. The scratched handle area is only the surface, there's a poor repair underneath it, I'm removing the phone aerials and there's an AMG kit to go on, plus any number of stone chips and other little bits.

That's got to be the most unneccesary damage to paint work, and it's awful to see - people leaving their keys in their hand when opening the door and scratching the hell out of the handle area!! :wallbash:

Neither - I'm using TGMSport in Fleet, I have a long-standing relationship with them from my days with Type-Rs, seen plenty of their work so know I will be happy with the results.

£500, which included a wood wheel also. That now needs to go off for retrimming.

Fleet in Hants I presume? I was there today, well, Minley....

Who did the wood?

That's the one. Their premises are very unassuming, but the quality is very high. The wood was done by Silvercrest in Iver.
