Ready steady Queue

And yet we expected the likes of Tesco and Amazon to keep on going as normal .....

Odd that.
I could explain the differences but, frankly, would feel I was patronising you.

I heard on the radio that London in particular simply does not have enough filling stations - much more profitable to put a block of houses or another coffee shop/convenience store/subway up?

This may be true for the city overall, but in my case there's an Esso station and a Shell station at either end of my road, about one mile apart, and they had fuel on-and-off over the past few days. The reason I know this is that when either has fuel, the road is blocked by queuing cars and I can't drive neither my ICE car nor my EV.... can't even get them out of their parking :( on the plus side, the madness lasts about a couple of days before they run dry again, so we do get the occasional lul.... :D

Have the seen the latest conspiracy theory on Facebook? Appears there was a stockpile of fuel cased by low usage so the government caused a panic deliberately to get rid of it before it degraded.

Words fail me.........

Usually there's only one truth.... and an infinite number of untruths. This explains why untruths are so common - because the truth is easily outnumbered.... and the human mind can be so very creative. In other words, I wonder what these people are smoking to be so creative.

Having said that the back log is far bigger than we should expect.
These 'News' posts on the PCS website go a long way to explaining why that is:
I make no comment as to the rights and wrongs of the background to the dispute, but its clear that industrial relations at the DVLA are poor and that there is a strong political angle to the dispute.

The number of unprocessed applications mentioned in the third link "...over two thirds of a million driving licenses awaiting any kind of action at DVLA. For the Drivers’ Medical section we believe the backlog of unactioned work to be over 300,000 with thousands of pieces of post not even scanned in." is eye-watering.

Remember that all HGV licence applications and renewals include a medical element, so (and I'm happy to be corrected on this) presumably they visit the Driver's Medical section which would make the first paragraph in the first link particularly relevant.

^^^ I can’t speak for other applications but my cheque was cashed by the DVLA in the second week of June.
There must be an awful amount of money sloshing about in a bank account somewhere.

Unfortunately it’s just fresh air for most of them

Anyone knows how many petrol stations actually closed-down during (say) one week because they were out of fuel - before the panic started? It may give an indication to what we can expect once the panic buying stops (which will presumably/hopefully happen quickly, and before we can see the effects of the government's proposed mitigations, e.g. visas and fast-tracking HGV licences etc)

filled the daily this morning at the local Asda, no queue, loadsa pumps free, £30 limit. Tesco silimilar story.

hopefully things will calm down in the cities too.

Also filled up the little Skoda couple of days ago no problem and the W212 this morning with £40 as the light came on, never put too much in the W212 as it does not do a lot of miles.

A solution is on it's way:-

Please .... feel free to patronise away.

Just be aware that I have been working in large organisations' offices over the pandemic and you might well get an even more withering and dismissive response back.

I have some very deep latent anger about the lack of adaptation and attitudes I have seen over the last 18 months.

Some of these are institutional and some are down to individuals.

About what, if I may ask?

The bit in bold is why I would have been patronising you, surely there is no need for me to explain that Tesco and Amazon have staff spread all over the country where the DVLA have their concentrated into one building?
For the same reason there should be no need for me to explain to you that DVLA staff will be more militant due to them feeling very secure in their work so 3 strikes during the pandemic will be more difficult to manage than a compliant (almost grateful) workforce.

There, I feel patronising.

Incidentally, your very deep latent anger might cloud your judgement if you are not careful.

There should be no need, I'm sure that Dryce will see that I was not being a **** but, actually, recognising his experience.

Hi , well I had to do something to keep me from going round the bend.

I went out with my mate in his electric car and report as follows.

Gloucestershire.

Although signs out saying fuel due could see no deliveries being made.

Worcestershire.

In West Worcestershire petrol is available with very low limits.

Herefordshire.

Desperate position according to media report.

I would love to be able to report that fuel supplies are improving but I cannot see any evidence of that happening.

On the up side no queuing as the Muppets realised not worth the effort.

In addition to your very well made point, the industry is more than capable of handling peak periods within the year. Only an idjit would think that an industry capable of distributing a billion litres a week would be disrupted by a spot of panic buying.

.
Yeah, right.

Well, Gloucestershire alone has about 3,350 miles of road. I'm sure your tour of the county and the two neighbouring ones (maybe 10,000 miles of road total?) gives an accurate picture for you to make these assumptions.

Perhaps we should base assumptions on the fact that the army are to provide soldiers to drive (commercially owned) tankers. And no mention of them being confined to Gloucestershire.

Hi , well it cannot be any worse than the rubbish the government are expecting us to believe.

This is know as a snapshot
