Ready steady Queue

Yeah, right.
Let me explain it slowly. The UK fuel industry keeps 35 million cars in fuel each year. Don't know the actual number of miles driven, but I would guess it's around 250 billion miles a year.

Terrorists can create a consumer panic which pulls down enough fuel to fill the tanks of 35 million cars to their top in a week or two: no problem.

What Road Haulage PR companies CAN'T do, is pull down more than the weekly demand on fuel, once those fuel tanks are full.

And the UK fuel industry is more than capable of serving that ongoing demand, because it does it every week of the year, through the highs and lows of the trading year. It has the oil supplies, the refineries, the vehicles, the drivers and the petrol stations to service that weekly on-going demand of x billion litres of fuel each and every week.

More likely, when the petrol stations reopen, they're going to be quiet, because 35 million cars have had their petrol tanks filled with more petrol than they usually use in the course of a month. (The average mileage for a UK car is a mere 700 miles a month - and that's heavily skewed by the commercial driver number - most do less than 500 miles)

I would love to be able to report that fuel supplies are improving but I cannot see any evidence of that happening.

On the up side no queuing as the Muppets realised not worth the effort.

SWMBO got fuel on Monday. No queue.

I got some fuel while passing my regular supermarket of choice today. No queue but it was busy.

Only irritation was £30 limit at the supermarket pump - but they haven't stuck their prices up.

Local Esso and Shell were quiet when we passed the other evening - but then their prices have gone up.

What does this prove?

Well some might say it's because Nicola Sturgeon can keep the pumps running when Boris Johnson can't.

The more pragmatic might say it's down to queues being self-reproducing and infectious - once they start appearing in an area then more start appearing and they spread. If you don't get dramaitc queuing then .... things stay calm.

…..Only irritation was £30 limit at the supermarket pump…..
An even lower limit (£20?) surely should have been adopted by all?

Hi , your are lucky that you have a fuel supply. In the area I am talking about no fuel.

Just been to local Asda, very few cars there and loads of pumps free. That's me sorted now till middle of next week!

I wonder if population density also has a bearing? From what i can see the SE has struggled more. In general i would think a higher population density in the SE and so a bigger cumulative effect when people panic buy?

Should people with cars producing 50mpg only buy the same as those with 25mpg...?
The choice of car is not the problem of the supply chain. So yes. Give everyone the chance of buying at least some fuel. Better than nowt.

But some getting half as far with it as others!
I agree, just playing devil's advocate. One size never fits all.

PS 7 petrol stations no super over last 2 days. 3 shut completely.

It would make more sense if no fuel purchase under £20 was allowed, but would be unenforceable unless payment was taken in advance. Alternatively, £2 per litre for any purchase under 15 litres, but normal price for any purchase over 15 litres. That would stop at least some of the bozos topping off their tanks 'just in case'...

Like it 👍
Watch out grant shapps.

Just going through this thread and similar threads on other brand forums it seams that SE and London are most affected with panic buying and fuel shortages as rightly suggested by @ChrisHGTV. My local Shell station was closed since Saturday like the other garages in the area (2BP, Esso, Gulf, Texaco and Morrissons). Only BP on North Circular had fuels deliveries but the queues were horrendous and I didn’t dare joining them. After all I wasn’t planning going anywhere by XF and Mini had almost full tank which could cover our daily commutes for two weeks.

Well just did the shopping trip of the week and in doing so went past all three filling stations we have here,Morrisons one car waiting,Asda self service a small site had 3 cars cuing, and the BP had only one car in it,but was just getting a delivery from Hoyer so may have conned the place off,so to my eyes the panic buying seems to be over.

Pretty much back to normal up in N Manchester (Bury) this morning. I passed a BP, which was devoid of queues though had all fuel varieties by the look of it, to get to my nearest Tesco to fill up with Momentum. No queue and a choice of pumps to use. In and out in under 5 minutes though with £72.50 less in my bank account. :(

Got a full tank ready for TRAX on Sunday now, hopefully it will get me there and back relatively comfortably...

Can't find any "super" for love not money round here. Quite a few don't sell it usually, but I've tried 7 now and no one has a clue when it will come. Getting annoying now! The AMG will be left at home until this are well and truly back to normal as it's running on fresh air and I can't risk not getting any when I next go out!
