Does anyone have any recomendations for good reliable diesel engine tuners?

I'm looking to increase the power and torque of the A160 CDI up to about 100bhp/250NM.

I'm not interested in things that sit between the throttle and the ECU or ECU piggy back's. Just ECU re-maps really. Tried DMS already:(

Thanks.

Ubsolute or Superchips though I'm not a fan of chip tuning.
It would be interesting to have some before and after EGT figures.

How come DMS were no good?

A good tuner will know all about this and have taken into consideration. The trouble is I don't know such a tuner that will tune an MB.

Have you tried Superschips? I used to think they were a bit "off the shelf" but I have new found respect for them.

Try http://e-maps.co.uk/ Just had my c270 done by Simon. Great guy and great service (he came out to me) and very good value at 300 sterlings.

I dont work for him by the way but just thought I'd spread the knowledge.

Car runs MUCH smoother and faster now. Gearbox is smooth with no jerkiness in changes and power is linear and mpg is better. Now have 200bhp odd and it feels it.

Regards,

Snez.

I have used superchips for my last 2 diesels. Have been very very impressed with them, would not hesitate in recommending them.

With tuning companies try to stick to the mainstream brands.

Should find out if/when they reply to the email I sent them..not yet though..

Well eventually......
I specifically asked about EGT figures as a result of their remaps.....

Dear XXX

Thank you for your interest in Superchips.

The Superchips custom modification is performed within safe tolerances so as not to compromise vehicle reliability furthermore Superchips warranty is offered for peace of mind please see attached.

Superchips reprogramme the boost and fuelling maps of the car's on-board computer (Electronic Control Unit), resulting in:

· Increased torque, or pulling power, which reduces the need for gear changing.

· Increased power, smoother performance and better response (for example when overtaking).

· The potential for greater fuel economy, when driven carefully.

When fitted with a Superchip, your Mercedes 320CDi 204 bhp would gain up to 32 bhp and an increase of up to 30% in torque (detailed power and torque curves are included, for example purposes).

The car's fuelling is carefully managed to optimise fuelling and retain the long term reliability of the engine. For your peace of mind, a Superchips warranty is included - at no additional cost - for vehicles that are still covered by the original manufacturer's warranty.

Our approved agents within your area can be viewed on www.superchips.co.uk , the modification costs £599* including installation and VAT. (*UK Price , subject to change. Regional price variations on installation may apply).

If you require any further information or assistance, please do not hesitate to call.

Yours sincerely

They sent me the graphs of the power and torque upgrades and a brochure as well, but NOTHING about EGT.

Looks like they don't bother. I've never heard of them fitting an EGT gauge to any development cars.

Superchips are one of the more reputable remapping companies so I think this would be the same across the board.

You can't read EGT temps from diagnostics equipment?

Pretty sure I can log those with mine on the Audi.

You need a probe in the exhaust manifold really.

I think the ones logged by the VAG climate control must be theoretical values based on fuel injected.

Either way Superchips didn't supply any info and it was the question I put to them.

A bit worrying, although I suspect it is more likely the case the person replying isn't as technical as those developing the maps.

I know my tuner could talk to you all afternoon about EGT temps and the like and while I don't personally follow it all it's good to know that's the level he's at.

I presviously though of Superchips as a bit of the shelf - generic remaps, but I iknow they get involved in custom work for customers too and I know of them working with a anohter tuner fairly big on the VAG scene that put a lot of effort into tuning a diesel golf - bigger injectors, turbos etc so you would think that level of developement would see them being fairly clued up.

It would be a real find to to know a generic or MB tuner that was so hands on.

Oh - I wasn't talking about the climate readings either, I have a fully licensed of VAGCOM setup from Ross-Tech. Of no interest to a MB forum anyway so enough of that.

From what I know and understand they use the first cars of a particular type that come to them for their development.
I have never heard of them installing an EGT gauge or probe, they just use smoke readings from the tailpipe, if they even do that.
I know Van Aaken used to take smoke readings on development cars but not sure about anyone else.

The person replying is supposed to be Technical.

I only asked that one question so think they don't have the information.

I think your tuner is more involved, best stick with him.

DMS were quite negative when I spoke to them. They said they couldnt do much with the engine at all! Quite disappointing really.

I've emailed this 'Simon' chap at e-map and also Rica. We will see what they come back with! Fingers crossed.

Why not consider the Carlsson option? It seems to offer pretty much the same gains and looks like it can be whipped out quickly if needed!

I know at least one person on this forum uses one. Are they no good?

I'm only interested in remaps rather than anything physically added in to the car. I suspect Carlsson wouldnt be cheap either!

I've have Optican, known to date as the worlds best OBD programming flash tool. I'm happy to give quotes, and all maps come from the online database of known and tested configs. For MBclub uk members, i'll happily do these upgrades for around £220.00

Ha ha. I wondered when you'd show up...;)

Nice price though for members..:)
