Reconditioned Auto Box? Pro's/Cons?

I've just had my gearbox reconditioned by Chris Gray. Here's his website. http://sitebuilder.yell.com/sb/show.do?id=SB0001901130000050 If he's not to far from you he is defiantly worth using. I've been pleased with the work he did on my car. The only down side is it did take him a bit longer to do the gearbox rebuild than I would have liked. He is a busy man so he may not be able to fit you in for a couple of weeks. But he is very knowledgeable and gearboxes are his speciality. My box cost £1600 to have rebuilt but it does all depend on the damage and what parts are needed to fix the problem. Hope you get the gearbox sorted soon.

I have decided to go elsewhere. Somwhere closer to home with Merc Specialists called Merc Torq in wolverhampton.

£1600 to recon? i paid £1600 at the stealers for a new one!

Cost me £1100 to have the auto gearbox reconditioned on our 1996 Audi A4 this year.

The local Audi dealer quoted £2484 ... excluding labour (lots) and VAT. That was also for a recon. gearbox, not a new one!

So M-B prices sound like a bargain.

Do not forget about the Mercedes exchange units.

You get the normal factory two year guarantee on those, just as you would for a brand new unit.

MB Gearbox: Recon versus New

I had a W123 280TE auto box reconditioned by Steve Redfearn in Wimbledon - no problems with it or the engine done at the same time.

A popular independent here told me to go to MB for new or exchange. He claimed that there's no comparison - MB every time.

Incidentally, what is the typical cost of an MB exchange box? In my case, it's the 5-speed auto (1991 300CE-24).
