Redex Fuel Additive

The Redex is VERY cheap at costco. I think I paid £10 for a 4 pack of the stuff for petrol injection engines....in Halfords its £5.99 per bottle !

Personally I havn't noticed any improvement, but if it is supposedly cleaning the system, guess there is no harm in giving it a go and relatively cheap if you get it from Costco or get someone to get it from there for you.

Agreed on Italian tune-up, but regarding the other things, I'm not mechanically minded enough to clean valves/change sensors! :D

Hoping a bottle of gloop will make a bit of a difference without the hassle :thumb:

Also, I know this is a REDEX thread, but it's the Forte stuff I have, which I understand to be a little different? I'm not sure adding a few capfuls of redex/millers would have the same effect as a bottle of this stuff?
I know that benefits of these additives generally seem to be a matter of personal opinion, but the Forte stuff seems to have less questionable effects from the variety of places I've looked. I guessed for £10 it was worth a go.... A lot seem to have had good results with this.

I used STP fuel cleaner and additive about 3 months ago on my 170k mile E230

Fuel consumption shot up for about 2 tanks, then normalised

Engine definitely and appreciably smoother after the 'treatment', and feels more powerful too .. not that you get to feel that much power! Well worth it .. even if the benefits are imaginary!

gonna put BP ultimate + Millers in tonight and give it an italian tune up! :D

If BP Ultimate has a higher Cetane rating then adding Millers is a waste of money.

Also, the benefits of such an "upgrade" will not be felt as the result of an italian tune up.

It will take a few hundred miles before anything more than a nicer sounding engine will be noticed.

I agree with Baron. I have recently been using Millers DPS4 and the only thing I have noticed is a slightly quieter engine on idle. There wasn't much smoke to speak of to start with and economy is pretty much the same as far as I can tell.

so I should put in normal BP with millers? I bought millers to see if I can cut down on the cars smoking.

As I understand it Millers contains various additives and other properties that increase the cetane rating of diesel fuel. The premium stuff like BP optimax and Shell V power already contains loads of additives so some think this is a false economy. i.e. you've already paid for it by buying the premium fuel.

Personally, we use Shell V power and I have been putting in DPS4 for the past few tank fulls. We don't really care about the added cost as our A class does circa 60MPG and it seems really cheap compared with our last car.

I figured putting in DPS4 was worth a shot, even if it doesn't do anything for our car, it certainly not going to harm it. Finger crossed anyway...

Millers does work in my opinion and is worth using. BP Ultimate and Shell V Power both increase the cetane rating as does millers. Giving that you are allowed to "double-dose" with Millers I see no harm in using the premium brand fuel with Millers.

My 2002 320DI smoked badly after I bought it (it had been stood for a year) and after replacing 6, injectors, 6, glow plugs, MAF, thermostat and having a B service still smoked badly and produced awful fumes.

Millers did reduce the smoking and fumes problem somewhat but couldn't eradicate the problem totally.

I went to see Ian B. Walker at 124Works for an "A" service and told him of the smoking problem. He added a full bottle of Forte Advanced Diesel Treatment to the car and the car is now smokeless. Brilliant!!!

Shame I didn't try the Forte stuff before spending all that cash (not with Ian) parts swapping.

The picture below was taken before the visit to Ian B. Walker and the addition of the Forte additive.

The car is now smoke-free.

So the smoke and its disappearance were all in my mind eh?

Read up on Cetane and you will find that you can add as much as your pocket can afford but over a certain level the effect is nil.

Right, MAF's EGR's and associated parts do gum up and oil does slosh about in the pipework causing smoke on acceleration.

Nothing, but nothing will beat hard treatment of a diesel (aka italian tune up)

In my experience nannying the engine to get ultimate MPG results in a smoky engine.

Not going to dis anyone for using Forte as I have no experience but, if the engine is run gently, the problem??? will re-occur

I agree a regular blast has also helped my car a lot.

Because the car was stood for a year, I think there were many cobwebs to blow away.

Adding the one-off Forte, regular Millers and a concerted effort to run the car daily for a week or so and asking for maximum effort cured a lot of problems.

For the first 8, months of ownership the car kicked down just 3-4 times. Now it kicks down on demand at.. cough.. any speed.

I use Millers in my SAAB 9 5 Estate 175bhp 1.9 TiD Hirsch upgrade
2008.........now 17,000 miles

I do quite a few "non stop" trips - over 1,000 kms - about 12 times a year.

Millers does make a difference in the SAAB, less noise, better torque and slightly more mpg.........the better torque and noise are noticeable......I have done a number of back to back "tank fulls" to test.

I also believe that it will help with any "soot" build up in the EGR value.....which can be a problem with both the 1.9 and 2.2 engines

This is my 6th SAAB 9 5 - two petrol Aeros, 3 x 1.9 TiDs and 1 x 2.2 TiD......and I do quite a few miles pa............so I believe that I am well qualified to spot any differences when useing of Millers or any different types of fuels
I use the "cheapest" diesel plus Millers....it works out cheaper than any premium Diesel fuel...........I have not noticed any difference when using e.g Shell V Max.....over the cheaper brands.

Snake oil...........is an easy answer from the sceptics..........but I do the miles........drive quite a number of different vehicles and have done so for over 40 years

Well, the Forte has gone in now and gave it a little blast at about 4k revs, so we'll see if any difference is noted.

Probably leave the sensing to Jadefox as women's sense seem a little sharper :D

Ugh posted under wrong name

Well, had to get onto the motorway today and had some expensive thing roaring up behind me in the middle lane so i took the opportunity to give the car a test on the Forte front - usually when you kick it right down and put pedal to metal it coughs a load of black smoke - this time, nothing!!!!

She shifted well into the gears after about 4000 revs and there was no lumpiness at all - very pleased indeed!! I would defo recommend this product.
Well done hubby for doing the research into it and thanks guys for posting about it in the first place :thumb:

There :) Much better!

A cup of acetone per tank is best. And much cheaper!

i use to use redex in petrol cars and diesel cars until i read a report that LUCAS fuel additive was better but they all say that but i use most of my fluids in my car is luscas and have done for a couple of years now and it has never done any harm my own opinion i find lucas better value for it's money ie bottle of redex roughly £4.50 and lucas £15 for 1.5L

I've been using Millers in both my diesel Saab and S211 for about 3 weeks now and have found the Saab definately improved regards noise and torque - even my wife noticed the feeling of improved "kick in the back" on acceleration, especially in the initial take-off which was always the achiles heel of this turbo diesel. My S211 still doesn't appear to have changed or improved noticably, although my wife thinks it idles quiter now...

I've now done about 500 miles since starting using millers. The MPG has improved by about 5% although how much of that is down to the warmer weather and the car feels "looser" and more willing to rev and generally just a tad bit faster.
