Retrofit W202 rain sensor

Went down scrappy today and got some bits for you

210 820 57 10 RAIN SENSOR BLACK BOX WITH WIRING HARNESS
00 6000 00

210 822 00 40 RAIN SENSOR BLACK BOX COVER

00 6000 10

There was also a bit that was on the widnscreen which the black box connects on to, do you need that aswell? Looked like it was part of windsreen, didnt want to damge it thought id check with yourself first.

Hope this helps.
For me? Sir you are a hero amongst men! Did you get some parts for yourself too? :)

The clip is integrated into the windscreen so unless you are trying to retrofit the rain sensor without having the correct screen it is not needed.

How much do you want for the bits?

Your more than welcome!
It cost me a tenner so you can have it for that + pp which i assume isnt going to be much. Ive also got one for myself but will be hanging onto until i need a new screen.

I use A1 WOKINGHAM CAR SPARES havnt got there number to hand but u can yell.com it.

The cars a nicely stacked and they bring them down for and can also remove parts( but this involes waiting around so might aswell do it urself)
They got a load of w202 , 2 w208 4 w210s one of which being a facelift wagon, and one w203 ( thats just off the top of my head!)

Can this only be done on facelift W202's?
Straight answer is I don't know but a check of the Russian EPC website might help. IIRC there is some mention of slightly earlier models being compatible but it might only go back as far as late 1996 or something (fractionally before facelift) depending almost entirely on the dome light and associated modules.

On my preface lift 1997 C230K, after fitting illuminated sun visors and auto dimming RVM It fully populated every available socket in the overhead light console apart from one, which is a Two way socket but with only one core wired to it on the overhead light console, wether thats for a auto wiper/rain sensor or an additional RVM function I don,t know as Shude says you might be able ascertain more info from the EPC.

The dimming functions all come from the same socket, just more wires IIRC :)

Sunroof perhaps?

Mines got a sunroof already so the connection is not that, I did always believe it was meant for the rain sensor but never been able to find anything on the EPC regarding this for the pre-facelift car.
Just for curiosity can some tell me how many cables are in the loom between the sensor and the overhead light.

Not sure but remember that facelift models will use canbus for some features so there will be fewer cables.

I realise this, I have been trying to think of a way the rain sensor will work with only one cable coming from it unless the loom involves splicing into other cable plugs present at the interior light unit.

Many thanks to abs, the rain sensor, wiring and cover have just arrived in the post! :D

Will attempt to fit this week sometime with detailed pics and instructions (likely we are about to see one of the driest periods since records began ;) ).

Fitted it (pics and HOWTO to follow) but my wipers still only work as intermittent. Do we know if some STAR work is needed to turn autowipers on?

Wow! every scrapyard ive been to, they are virtually holding a shotgun at you if you ask to pick what you want.

Let me know next time you head down there :D

Latest news is that Ian Walker took my car to MB during a service to check for fault codes and asked for the autowipers to be activated. Answer was that it's not possible and that my car "appears" to not have them installed as far as STAR is concerned.

I suspect the technician tried to calibrate the autowipers rather than activate (could be the same process I suppose) so could do with a second opinion really!

Sorry to have to bump this thread but did you ever get auto wipers to work with that sensor ?

Also I may be wrong but is there not a seperate wiper stalk with the auto setting on it that is also required or would the off position usually be Auto ?

Hi,
My C43 has rain sensing auto wiper and the stalk has the same functionality as my C230K which has,nt, not sure about fitting it to pre-face lift 202's, but "I believe" on a face lift car it is a matter of the sensor just being plugged in (provided you have the right windscreen that is) to the overhead light cluster, and some coding done on STAR.

I have managed to source the sensor and wiring with the same part no's listed in this thread but would want to know if its possible to get it done since after reading Nicks attempt it failed on coding :dk: Any documentation on this retrofit Andy ?

Hi,
I have no info on this, but I think Nic is right in his assumption that the MB tech did,nt understand/know what he was supposed to be doing when he had STAR plugged in, I think it would be a similar procedure to what was done to when my Xenon levelling system was activated.
The w202 (& w210) was one of the first MB's too have this sort of control system programming, and is on a slightly simpler level than the later vehicles, i don,t believe many remember the exact procedure as the cars are getting quite old now.
I,m 99.9% positive this is a viable retro fit, i played with my system a couple of times (thinking if it was possible to retro fit it to a pre-face lift w202) and with my sensor unlpugged it is just a normal intermittent wipe.
I,m sure Olly could do it, or i know of another guy very near me who coded and calibrated my zenons levelling system
If you go to Ollies meet in May, i,m sure it could be programmed in/turned on, as all that needs to happen is the computer to see it when the sensor is plugged in.

Hi,
I have just been looking at the wiring drawings of the wiper on WIS and STAR finder, and i think the only thing to check would be if your overhead light console has the connection for the sensor.
With the info on this thread and what i have found, i would go for the retro fit and feel very confident about its outcome.

I recall discussion of it not working and the OP being told to just unplug it and the position 1 returns to int wipe.
