Rust bubble - how to clear it

Shame its rusting through. I thought the part was well over £650!

My uncles 500E rusted too, after repainting it rusted through again so it is possible.

After that, he abandoned the car in the garage and it's been there for over 5 years now!

You HAVE to rescue it, especially with username like that!

Yeah I know. Before she was put away she had the rear suspension done too.

It's a 1991 black/black 500E with around 300,000km on the clock. Bought from a guy at an army base in 2003.

It's actually a beautiful car, he had it on 18" BBS's years ago, but now its sitting on 8-hole chromies!

Awesome car. I've attached a photo.

Is he wanting to get rid?

Nah, he doesnt want to sell it I don't think - which is why I have not been able to get my hands on it! He had a couple other cars, like the ML55 and a C43.

I think theres something wrong with the ABS sensor too. Who knows what else is wrong with it after 5 years.

I will definatly restore it when I graduate next year and able to insure it (classic car insurance?). Renew everything and bring it back to OEM...with a few subtle mods of course!

Got any pics of the rust Uchiha? There may be a way to salvage it by cutting out the rusted part, welding in a new piece of metal and blending it in.

Also, could i have the wing if you are going to get rid of it?

why dont you get a carbon fibre wing replacement it will be lighter stronger and you can get it painted to match the car? just a suggestion! I hate rust its is a bloody cancer for cars:crazy:

I'll swap it for your fridge!

Only joking. I'll contact you first once I know what I'm doing. I'm sure we can come to an arrangement. I'll see if I can post some pics tomorrow.

Owen, I was thinking the same thing. The only thing holding me back is that CF does not have the same feel as cold hard steel. I think that's part of the character of old Mercs. Knock a body panel on my car with your knuckles and compare with any modern car and there's a difference which is part of the character of the car.

What do people think? Any ideas what something like that would cost for front wing.

I've been playing with old cars for years and have to say i've never come acros a Fiberglass wing that fits properly without a lot of mods, i'd suspect a carbon fibre one would be the same, on race cars panel fit isnt a huge priority, even pattern steel ones often dont fit right and if you cant do metal work well enough to sort out the fit your self and you have to pay someone else to do it its often cheaper to buy a genuine article in the end, only time i ever use non genuine panels is if i have seen that they fit right on other cars OR if the genuine ones are no longer availabe.

Yeah that is very true it will not fit right, unless on the carbon mold was made from an original part even then it would require alot of time and effort on the person making the part and he or she probably cant be bothered as ive seen in some places! price probably would be the same as a genuine part? unless there is a place that makes these all the time

1st one shows bubbling on the wing.

2nd one probably shows nothing but is supposed to highlight rust behind the bumper.

Those seem very minor... i would just have the wings stripped and repainted.

my only concern with that approach is that the rust is coming through from the inside which means just painting over it will be a short term (up to 2 years) fix.

Cutting the rust out would be preferable and for such a small area relatively easy

I agree. It has to be a new wing or CF.

For the moment, I'll leave it as I have other problems to contend with but I will update to let you know what I did. Thanks for the advice.

I bet, given where those bubbles are, there is water trapped in them like a blister.

The panel is probably rotten from behind.

If you intend to keep the car for a few years, get a new wing.

If you want to sell the car, get some P38 and someone prepared to spray the panel. Then sell the car fast.

remove the wing and rub down to bare shiney metal on BOTH sides. Then treat with a rust remedy of some sort and then coat with POR-15. Then fill where needed and prime & resspray the area. should hold for a good while. i dont reckon its woth replacing the whole wing just for these bubbles, unless its more serious rust that has been repaired before in the past & rust is starting to re-appear. you may start to rub down and find all sorts of previous repairs.
